The fourth season of The Boys faced a major crisis behind the scenes. Showrunner Eric Kripke recently shared that Prime Video thought about removing the season’s final episode entirely. The episode showed political violence, and real-world events made things very uncomfortable for the streaming service.

The timing could not have been worse. Season 4 of the hit superhero series finished filming in 2023. But when the finale was ready to air in July 2024, something terrible happened in real life. A shooting at a Donald Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024 killed one person and injured two others. The former president also got hurt in the ear.

The original title of the finale was “Assassination Run.” After the real-world events, Amazon and the producers had to act fast to avoid any misunderstandings.

Prime Video Made Big Changes to the Final Episode

Amazon Prime Video did not just think about canceling the episode. They took several steps to address the situation before releasing it on July 18, 2024. First, they changed the episode title from “Assassination Run” to simply “Season Four Finale.” They also added a strong warning at the start of the episode.

The warning told viewers that the episode had “scenes of fictional political violence.” It said some people might find these scenes disturbing, especially after the recent real-world events.

Amazon released an official statement that said:

“The Boys is a fictional series that was filmed in 2023, and any scene or plotline similarities to these real-world events are coincidental and unintentional. Amazon, Sony Pictures Television and the producers of The Boys reject, in the strongest terms, real-world violence of any kind.”

Kripke confirmed that executives at Prime Video were very worried. They talked about removing the episode completely. But the team decided to keep it with changes and clear warnings.

The Episode Fit The Boys’ Long History of Political Stories

The show has always mixed politics with dark humor and superhero violence. Eric Kripke explained that this direction was not an accident. When he first pitched the show, it was before Trump got elected. The idea of a celebrity becoming an authoritarian leader seemed crazy back then.

Kripke told Variety in June 2024:

“When we first pitched the show, it was before Trump was elected. And the idea that a celebrity would actively want to turn themselves into a fascist autocrat was kind of a crazy idea. I mean, it still is. But it turned out to have happened? We sort of lucked into a show whose metaphor is really about the moment we’re living in, which is the cross-section of celebrity and authoritarianism.”

Season 4 showed the aftermath of Robert Singer winning the presidential election. His running mate was Victoria Neuman, played by Claudia Doumit, who secretly had superpowers. The season explored how powerful people try to take control of the government.

Fan Reactions to the Controversial Finale

Viewers had mixed feelings about the episode. Some appreciated the show’s boldness. Others thought the timing was very bad, even with the changes. Social media lit up with discussions about whether the show had gone too far.

Many fans understood that the episode was filmed long before the real-world event. The show’s team could not have predicted what would happen. But some viewers still felt uncomfortable watching political violence so soon after a real assassination attempt.

The controversy did not stop the show from being successful. The Boys remains one of Prime Video’s biggest hits. The series has been praised for its willingness to tackle difficult subjects that other shows avoid.

This Was Not the Only Scrapped Content from Season 4

The finale was not the only part of The Boys Season 4 that almost did not make it to screens. Earlier in the season, Kripke revealed that a funny scene with Will Ferrell got cut. Ferrell appeared in Episode 2 as a character named Ferrell Streep.

During filming, Ferrell and P.J. Byrne improvised a make-out scene. Kripke said both actors are amazing at improvisation. They kept trying different things while the cameras rolled. At one point, they just looked at each other and started kissing.

Kripke explained:

“As you can imagine, both of those guys are world-class improvisers. We have so much film of them riffing and trying different things. At one point, they make out. There’s just so much material there, that we couldn’t use it all as much as I wanted to.”

The scene did not make the final cut. But Kripke hopes it might appear in special features or deleted scenes someday.

What Episode 6 Taught the Showrunners

Another episode from Season 4 also caused discussions. Episode 6, titled “Dirty Business,” showed Hughie Campbell (played by Jack Quaid) getting sexually assaulted while undercover. The scene was meant to be disturbing, but some viewers thought it went too far.

Kripke defended the scene as part of the show’s dark parody of superhero stories. He compared it to Batman’s darker elements from the comic books. But many fans on social media said the show was being careless with serious topics.

One viewer wrote on social media:

“Very interesting that such a left-leaning progressive show like #theboys would feature an extended r*pe scene with the male protagonist thats played for laughs.”

The backlash showed that even a show known for pushing boundaries has limits that audiences care about.

The Future of The Boys After Season 4

The Boys will end with Season 5. Kripke announced this decision on June 11, 2024. He believes five seasons is the right number for the story he wants to tell. The final season is currently in production.

Kripke told Deadline that he already knows how the series will end. He can write the last 10 pages right now. But he is also nervous about getting the ending right. He knows that people remember finales for a long time.

“You could have the greatest show for years, but if you stiff that ending, that’s what everyone remembers.”

Despite the controversies, Kripke said Prime Video never asked him to make the show less political or less intense. There have been “zero notes about pulling our punches,” he confirmed. The streaming service seems to trust the creative team to handle difficult subjects.

Season 4 of The Boys is now streaming in full on Prime Video. Viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India can watch all episodes. The fifth and final season does not have a release date yet. Production is ongoing, and fans can expect more shocking moments before the series ends.
