The final season of The Boys is almost here, but showrunner Eric Kripke admits real-life events have made his extreme satire feel less like fiction and more like a documentary. The creator recently shared his frustration about how current American politics have mirrored the show’s wildest ideas, leaving him “bummed out” instead of satisfied.
Kripke revealed that the writing team for The Boys Season 5 finished their scripts before the November 2024 presidential election. They thought they were creating a warning about authoritarianism. Instead, they watched reality deliver the same story anyway.
“I’m totally bummed out to say we wrote it before the election,” Kripke told TV Guide. “It sounds super naive now, but I swear the plan was, ‘Let’s write a 1984 version of what creeping authoritarianism looks like in America,’ and maybe everyone will be like, ‘Whew, we really dodged a bullet.’ But instead, we got hit with the bullet.”
The showrunner explained that many concepts the writers considered “far-fetched” have since become real. This includes one specific moment in the upcoming season that he says is no longer shocking because it actually happened.
The Homelander Line That Stopped Being a Joke
Kripke teased a major moment from the new season without giving away spoilers. He pointed to a line spoken by Antony Starr‘s character Homelander in Episode 7.
“There’s a line — I won’t give it away — but there’s a line in Episode 7 that Homelander says that was the craziest line we could think of, and it’s already happened,” Kripke said.
The writing room used to operate with a dark motto. Kripke shared that they would tell each other, “Bad for the world, good for the show” whenever they came up with something extreme. That joke no longer feels funny.
“And a lot of things that were far-fetched for us, we’re like — ‘That’s crazy!’ — have come to pass in a way that’s really really f***ing troubling,” he added.
Homelander as a Trump Parallel From the Start
The connection between Homelander and real-world politics is not new. Kripke has been open about this since the beginning. He confirmed that the character was always meant as a version of Donald Trump.
“When Seth [Rogen] and Evan [Goldberg] and I took it out to pitch, it was 2016,” Kripke explained. “We just wanted to do a very realistic version of a superhero show, one where superheroes are celebrities behaving badly.”
Back then, Trump was still the “He’s not really getting the nomination, is he?” guy. After the election, everything changed.
“Suddenly, we were telling a story about the intersection of celebrity and authoritarianism and how social media and entertainment are used to sell fascism,” Kripke said. “We’re right in the eye of the storm. And once we realized that, I just felt an obligation to run in that direction as far as we could.”
No Plans to Soften the Final Season
Despite the uncomfortable closeness between fiction and reality, The Boys Season 5 will not pull back. Kripke made it clear that the show will stay true to its vision.
“There’s been a total of zero notes about pulling our punches or about making things less political or less savage,” Kripke told the Los Angeles Times. “The various powers that be have been really great about it. I think they know that we’d just do it anyway, so why bother?”
He stressed that pushing back against authority is necessary, especially now. “Look, not about this particular show, but I’m certainly worried about a cooling effect when, now more than ever, you need people in the back of the classroom throwing spitballs,” Kripke said. “That’s not just healthy, that’s vital. It’s really important that people who can thumb their nose at it don’t get scared.”
The Final Season’s Story
The Boys Season 5 takes place in a world where Homelander has complete control. According to the official description from Amazon Prime Video, it is “Homelander’s world, completely subject to his erratic, egomaniacal whims.”
The story follows several dark turns. Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie are locked up in places called “Freedom Camps.” Annie (Starlight) is trying to fight back against a massive supe force. Kimiko is missing. Then Billy Butcher returns with a plan to use a virus that could kill every supe on Earth.
The trailer for the final season shows Homelander sitting in the Oval Office with his feet up on the desk. He says, “We need to prepare America for my ascension.”
Fans have already noticed the direct comparisons. One person on social media wrote, “Blonde man in the White House….. hmm.” Another posted a picture of Homelander in the Oval Office and said, “What a cool plot line that definitely doesn’t reflect real life… RIGHT GUYS?”
The Show’s Official Social Media Acknowledges the Shift
The official The Boys social media accounts have also recognized how close the show has come to reality. When someone online commented that the series was no longer satire, the official The Boys X account responded directly.
“Been a documentary for awhile, mate,” the account wrote.
This response captures the strange position the show finds itself in. What started as extreme parody now looks like reporting.
What Starr Says About Homelander Fans
Antony Starr, who plays Homelander, has also spoken about how some viewers see his character. He shared his surprise that people would support such an clearly evil figure.
“We had a bunch of guys that we all kind of knocked them down a little bit on social media to say, ‘This guy is not the hero of any story,’” Starr said. “They were really glorifying him, they loved him. Which is surreal.”
He added that he did not expect people to feel empathy for “this monster.”
Kripke was even more direct when asked about fans who think Homelander is the hero. “Some people who watch it think Homelander is the hero. What do you say to that? The show’s many things. Subtle isn’t one of them. So if that’s the message you’re getting from it, I just throw up my hands.”
