Netflix has announced that the second season of “The Sandman” will be its last. This news arrives following multiple sexual assault allegations against the series’ creator and writer, Neil Gaiman, which he denies.
The End of Dream’s Journey
Netflix confirmed the show’s ending with a social media post, stating, “Dream’s journey has all been building to this. The story of The Sandman comes to its epic conclusion in 2025.” Showrunner Allan Heinberg explained that the series was always meant to focus solely on Dream’s story. He added that when they reviewed the remaining source material, they determined one more season would be sufficient. Heinberg expressed gratitude to Netflix for the opportunity to complete the adaptation.
Allegations Against Neil Gaiman
This announcement follows recent sexual assault allegations against Neil Gaiman. An article in New York magazine detailed accusations from multiple women. Gaiman responded to these claims on his website, stating, “As I read through this latest collection of accounts, there are moments I half-recognize and moments I don’t, descriptions of things that happened sitting beside things that emphatically did not happen. I’m far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.”
The Sandman’s Impact
“The Sandman” premiered in 2022, starring Tom Sturridge as Morpheus/Dream. The cast includes Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, David Thewlis, Jenna Coleman, Gwendoline Christie, Sandra Oh, and Mark Hamill. Gaiman had previously hinted at exciting additions for the second season, including the youngest member of The Endless, Delirium.
Other Projects and the Fallout
In July 2024, two women made separate allegations against Gaiman during a podcast. He also denied these claims. Another Gaiman project, “Good Omens,” will conclude with a single 90-minute episode instead of a full third season. Gaiman contributed to the finale’s writing but was not involved in its production. Following the New York magazine article, Dark Horse Comics ended its association with Gaiman. An adaptation of Gaiman’s “Anansi Boys” for Amazon Prime Video, in which he wrote two episodes, has yet to receive a release date.
