The newest episode of Apple TV’s The Last Frontier, titled “The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie,” plunges the darkened town of Fairbanks into a fresh crisis. With a mass power outage leaving the community vulnerable, a brilliant and ruthless escaped convict seizes the opportunity to execute a dangerous plan, turning the local hospital into his personal chessboard.
Frank Remnick’s New Adversary
Dr. William Wigg, an escaped convict known as the “Angel of Death,” emerges as the central threat in this episode. A serial killer who poisoned 36 of his own patients and staff members, he was being transported for execution before the plane crash set him free. He uses the chaos of the blackout to his advantage, ambushing two paramedics and taking one of them, Claire, hostage. Disguising himself as an EMT, he brings his paralyzed victim to the hospital, where he plans to use a medical helicopter as his ticket to freedom.
Sarah Remnick, who is at the hospital checking on her son Luke, accidentally becomes a key player. Her sharp instincts and memory of Frank’s fugitive photos help her recognize Wigg, prompting her to sound the alarm. She cleverly stalls the dangerous doctor, creating enough time for Frank and his team to arrive. However, capturing Wigg is only the beginning of the problem.
A Hostage Pilot and a Dangerous Deal
After his capture, Dr. Wigg reveals a shocking trump card. He claims that Timothy O’Bannon, one of the pilots from the crashed JPATS flight, is still alive but being kept in a storage container. Wigg says he is keeping O’Bannon alive with life-saving medication that must be administered every eight hours. In exchange for the pilot’s location, Wigg makes a specific demand: he wants a safe deposit box flown in from a bank in Seattle, delivered by the bank manager herself.
This puts Frank Remnick in a difficult position. The town-wide blackout makes coordinating such a mission incredibly complex, and he is initially skeptical of Wigg’s story. To verify the claim, Frank contacts Havlock over the radio, who confirms that O’Bannon is indeed alive and was dragged from the wreckage by another convict. This confirmation forces Frank to weigh the moral cost of negotiating with a serial killer against the potential intelligence a surviving pilot could provide about the crash.
Sidney’s Race for Evidence
While Frank deals with Dr. Wigg, CIA agent Sidney Scofield is fighting her own battle. She is increasingly desperate to gain control of a hard drive recovered from the motel, which the FBI is working to decrypt. Her concern stems from the drive’s contents, which she believes contain malware used to sabotage the plane.
The episode reveals through flashbacks that the concept of using a plane crash as an untraceable assassination method was originally Sidney’s idea. The CIA was apparently targeting Havlock in the crash, and Sidney now fears she will be blamed for the entire operation. Her past is further explored in a flashback to a mission in Kyiv with Havlock, where the CIA ordered them to kill an innocent aid worker to maintain their cover. Havlock refused, positioning him as a more moral figure, while Sidney’s past actions remain murky.
A Mother’s Revenge and a Witness Secured
Dr. Wigg’s plan ultimately fails, but not due to police work. The bank manager he demanded to see turns out to be the mother of his first victim. She arrives prepared and shoots Wigg dead on the makeshift runway before he can get what he wants.
Because Wigg had already revealed O’Bannon’s location before he died, the authorities are able to rescue the pilot. This provides a major breakthrough in the larger conspiracy, as O’Bannon is not only a living witness to the crash but can also reportedly testify that Havlock intervened during the disaster, helping people survive.
A Hidden Gun and a Family Secret
A smaller but significant subplot involves Luke Remnick and a secret that Frank is keeping. The episode hints at a handgun hidden in a copy of the book Walter Coates’s Alaska in the Remnick house. This secret is being slowly drawn out, adding another layer of mystery to Frank’s character and his family’s history.
The blackout continues to cripple Fairbanks, creating a smoky, claustrophobic atmosphere that sets the stage for heightened tension in the episodes to come. With a key witness now in play and the CIA’s conspiracy slowly unraveling, the hunt for Havlock is set to become even more complicated.
