The seventh episode of The Mighty Nein, titled “Belonging,” sees the adventuring party fracturing under pressure. Following a grim public execution that signals the Empire’s rising power, the group receives a dangerous job offer and falls apart . Each member goes their separate way in the city of Zadash, wrestling with personal demons, unanswered prayers, and unresolved pasts . By the end, they are pushed back together not by choice, but by the sheer necessity of survival in a world growing more hostile by the minute .
A Public Execution Raises the Stakes
The episode opens with a brutal event that sets a dark tone. Curator Tasha of the Cobalt Soul is publicly executed for imprisoning the powerful mage Trent Ikithon. This act is a direct message from the Dwendalian Empire, showing it will protect its most powerful allies and punish anyone who challenges them . For The Mighty Nein, it is a stark warning about the severe consequences of meddling in high-stakes politics and uncovering inconvenient truths . The event immediately puts everyone associated with the Cobalt Soul, including member Beauregard, on edge .
The Gentleman’s Offer and Immediate Division
Soon after, the party’s patron, The Gentleman, presents them with a new job: steal the Luxon Beacon, a sacred Kryn artifact, from Trent Ikithon . This would place them directly in the center of the conflict between the Empire and the Kryn Dynasty. However, instead of uniting the group, the offer causes immediate disagreement . Some see strategic value in the mission, while others view it as an unacceptable risk. Unable to reach a consensus, the party disbands in Zadash, with members splitting up to pursue their own paths .
Where the Mighty Nein Went and What They Faced
With the group scattered, the episode follows each character’s solo journey, highlighting their vulnerabilities and fears.
- Beau and Dairon: Seeking guidance, Beau finds her mentor, Dairon, who warns her to keep a low profile and avoid attracting the Empire’s attention . Dairon gives Beau her own staff and goes into hiding, highlighting the extreme danger they are all in .
- Fjord and Jester: Fjord takes Jester to a safe place her mother arranged, but then tells her he must leave to find himself, creating a painful emotional distance . Later, while trying to communicate with his patron, the sea entity Uk’otoa, Fjord nearly drowns in a bathhouse vision and is saved by Beau . This shared moment of failure leads them to reconsider the Gentleman’s heist .
- Jester and Nott: Feeling abandoned and desperate for a sign from her god, the Traveler, Jester teams up with a despondent Nott. Their frustration leads them to vandalize a temple of the Dawnfather in a chaotic, impulsive act . When the Traveler still does not appear, Jester questions her own sanity, with Nott offering shaky comfort .
- Caleb’s Confrontation: Determined to face his past, Caleb abandons Nott to pursue Trent Ikithon alone . He is intercepted by his former peers, Astrid and Eadwulf, who trap him but ultimately let him go with a warning to never return . Humbled and depressed, Caleb returns to Nott and apologizes, admitting the danger of acting alone .
- Mollymauk’s Mystery: Molly secretly follows Cree, a figure from his forgotten past, to an abandoned house. Inside, he finds a blood-stained shrine and a chilling ritual site that seems to eerily reflect his own image, deepening the mystery of his origins .
Essek’s Betrayal and a Mother’s Sacrifice
A parallel story unfolds in the Kryn Dynasty. Essek‘s betrayal of his people to bargain with Trent Ikithon is discovered by his ally, Verrat. However, Essek’s mother, Deirta, who is terminally ill, learns the truth first . In a shocking turn, she confesses her own illness to the Bright Queen and accepts execution, but on one condition: that Essek be the one to carry it out . She whispers for him to “return the Beacon,” hoping this traumatic act will force him to change his ways . Essek then frames Verrat for the theft, and the Bright Queen orders Verrat executed and tasks Essek with recovering the Beacon himself .
