The second season of The Night Agent put FBI agent Peter Sutherland in a dangerous new position. After his heroic actions in Season 1, Peter became a full-fledged Night Agent, stepping out from behind his desk and into a much bigger conspiracy . The season ended with a mission accomplished, but also with major changes for Peter and his allies. Before Peter Sutherland returns for his next assignment on February 19, 2026, here is what you need to remember .
What Was the Season 2 Conspiracy?
The central threat of the season was Project Foxglove, a former and highly classified CIA program. The program aimed to create chemical weapons so that scientists could develop antidotes for them . One of the weapons created was a deadly nerve agent called KX.
Samples of KX fell into the hands of Viktor Bala, a dictator imprisoned for war crimes . Bala’s family, including his nephew Markus Dargan, planned to use the chemical weapon in a major attack on Manhattan . Their goal was to carry out a terrorist attack on the United Nations building in New York as an act of revenge .
Peter’s mission was to find and stop this attack. To do this, he had to work with his former ally Rose Larkin and a new character, Noor Taheri, an aide at the Iranian Mission to the UN .
How Did Peter and Rose Stop the Attack?
In the finale, Peter, Rose, and law enforcement stopped Markus’s plan. They found and captured most of the KX canisters attached to the UN building’s air vents . However, Markus escaped to a nearby hotel with one final canister, planning to release the gas through the hotel’s ventilation system .
Peter and Rose confronted and killed Markus in a hotel room. To stop the gas from spreading through the building, they had to think fast. Rose created a fire inside the hotel’s HVAC system using cleaning supplies. The fire triggered the system to automatically seal all the vents, containing the KX and saving everyone in the hotel .
Why Did Peter and Rose Break Up?
After they saved the city, Peter and Rose had a serious talk. Peter told Rose that as long as he was a Night Agent, she would be in danger. People would always try to use her to get to him .
โI need you to promise me something. As long as Iโm a Night Agent, people are gonna try to use you to get to me. Promise me youโre not gonna wait for me to call. You hear Iโm in trouble, youโre not gonna come look for me. Just forget about me,โ Peter said to Rose .
This heartbreaking decision was made out of love and protection. Series creator Shawn Ryan said it was an unselfish choice, a tragic sacrifice to keep Rose safe . The final scenes show Rose moving back to California for a work promotion, while Noor and her mother start a new, quiet life in Illinois after being granted asylum .
Who Is Jacob Monroe and How Did He Win?
A key figure in Season 2 was Jacob Monroe, a powerful and mysterious intelligence broker . To get information that would save Rose when she was kidnapped, Peter made a deal with Monroe. Peter stole a confidential file from the United Nations archives for him .
That file contained damaging information linking a presidential candidate, Patrick Knox, to the Foxglove project and the sale of chemical weapons to Viktor Bala . Monroe leaked this file to Knox’s opponent, Governor Richard Hagan, forcing Knox to drop out of the race just before the election. This all but guaranteed Hagan would become the next President of the United States .
Monroe’s plan was to install a president he could control. With Hagan in the White House, Monroe would have a direct line to the highest level of government, allowing him to sell classified information for huge profits .
What Is Peter’s New Mission for Season 3?
After the attack was stopped, Peter turned himself in to his Night Action handler, Catherine Weaver, for his illegal actions . Instead of sending him to prison, Catherine gave him a new, undercover mission.
Because Monroe believes he owns Peter, Catherine wants Peter to play along. When Monroe calls for a favor, Peter will do it, acting as a double agent to gain Monroe’s trust .
โWe need you to determine the exact nature of their relationship. He still believes he owns you, so weโre gonna let himโฆ Gain his trust, and weโll cover every snake on his payroll and then expose him,โ Catherine told Peter .
This means Peter Sutherland will be going deep undercover, much like his own father once did, to take down a corrupt businessman who now has the ear of the President .
