The Pitt is tackling the sensitive topic of addiction within the medical field with careful attention to realism and respect, according to the actors bringing the story to life. Patrick Ball, who plays Dr. Frank Langdon, emphasized the show’s commitment to handling this storyline responsibly. The character’s journey through addiction and recovery is a major focus as the show’s second season continues.
For actor Patrick Ball, portraying Dr. Langdon’s struggle is a personal responsibility. He has stated that accurately showing addiction as a disease was very important to him and the creative team.
“This is something that affects my life and the lives of many people that I love,” Ball explained. “To be asked to be part of telling this story was an honor and a responsibility, and something that I wanted to make sure that we did with the utmost respect and realism”.
He specifically noted the importance of the show’s message that “rehabilitation is possible and change is possible”.
A Different Doctor Returns from Rehab
The second season of The Pitt sees Dr. Frank Langdon returning to the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center after a ten-month stay in a rehabilitation facility. His comeback is met with mixed reactions from the hospital staff. While senior doctor Dr. Robby remains distant and assigns Langdon to less critical work, another colleague offers a warmer welcome.
Dr. Mel King, played by Taylor Dearden, greets Langdon with immediate support. In the season’s early episodes, she hugs him and is eager to reintegrate him both as a friend and a mentor. Dearden describes Mel as a character who naturally “sees the best in everyone” and is quick to forgive.
Taylor Dearden on Mel’s Growth and Support
Taylor Dearden shared that her character’s supportive reaction stems from her own professional growth. When Langdon confesses his addiction to her, Mel tells him, “You never let me down”. Dearden explains that the news of his addiction does not change Mel’s view of him.
“The only thing that is different is that she’s a different doctor now,” Dearden said. “She’s not someone who desperately needs someone to be there for her. And she’s more independentโฆ she’s excited to reincorporate Dr. Langdon back into her professional life and as a friend and a mentor”.
This marks a shift from the first season, where Mel was a new doctor who relied more on Langdon’s guidance.
Patrick Ball on Playing a Changed Character
Patrick Ball contrasts the confident, “cowboy medicine” doctor he played in the first season with the changed man who returns in season two.
“You meet a Langdon in season one that was really sure of himselfโฆ I think in season two, you meet a Langdon who maybe isn’t so sure,” Ball observed.
The actor did not know about his character’s addiction storyline when he first took the role, which allowed him to initially build Langdon around his competence and love for the job. Ball’s own parents, who are a paramedic and an ER nurse, have praised the show for its medical accuracy, which adds to his commitment to portraying all aspects of the role truthfully.

The Pitt’s Realistic Approach to Medicine and Addiction
The show has been noted for its stripped-down, realistic style. Unlike many medical dramas, it focuses almost entirely on the work within the hospital, avoiding typical subplots about doctors’ romantic lives. The entire show is filmed on one set with handheld cameras, creating an intense, immersive feeling.
This realism extends to the addiction storyline. An analysis by a recovery therapist praised the show for its accurate depiction of an addict’s denial and the confrontations that follow. The therapist highlighted that the show presents a “textbook” and correct approach to intervention, including the stipulation of 30 days of inpatient rehab, random drug testing, and mandatory support meetings. The show has resonated with real medical professionals and is noted for sparking health conversations among viewers.
New episodes of The Pitt are released every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on HBO Max.
