A new science fiction series is coming to television. The War Between the Land and the Sea is a new show set in the world of Doctor Who. It tells the story of a global crisis that begins when an ancient species rises from the ocean. The show will feature the return of a classic monster and a team of heroes working to prevent a world-ending war.

When You Can Watch The War Between the Land and the Sea

Mark your calendars for a December premiere. The first two episodes of the five-part series will arrive in the UK on December 7, 2025 on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer. The story will continue with episodes three and four on December 14, and the finale on December 21. For international viewers, the series will begin streaming on Disney+ in 2026.

The Story and Cast of Characters

The plot centers on the organization known as UNIT. They must spring into action when the Sea Devils, a fearsome and ancient species, emerge from the sea and reveal themselves to humanity. This event triggers an international crisis and pushes the world to the brink of a catastrophic war between the land and the sea.

The series brings together a talented cast. Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw lead the show, playing characters named Barclay and Salt. They are joined by several actors reprising their roles from the wider Doctor Who universe. Jemma Redgrave returns as the UNIT leader Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Alexander Devrient is back as Colonel Ibrahim, and Ruth Madeley returns as Shirley Anne Bingham. Notably, Colin McFarlane is also back as General Austin Pierce, a character last seen fifteen years ago in the series Torchwood.

Behind the Scenes and Filming

The series was created by Russell T Davies, the current showrunner of Doctor Who. He wrote the series alongside Pete McTighe, with Davies penning the first and final episodes. The entire five-episode series was directed by Dylan Holmes Williams. Filming started in August 2024 and took place in various locations across Wales, with some international filming in Mallorca, Spain. Production wrapped up in December 2024.
