The truth is out there, and now it has a new face. The upcoming ‘The X-Files’ reboot from Oscar-winning director Ryan Coogler has found its second lead. Himesh Patel has officially joined the cast, stepping into the role of an FBI agent assigned to investigate unexplained phenomena. He will star opposite Danielle Deadwyler, who was announced as the other lead in February 2026.

Hulu gave the pilot a green light earlier this year, and now production is moving forward with its two main stars locked in. The project marks the first time the beloved sci-fi series will be rebooted with a new cast and a fresh creative vision.

A Reunion for the Two Leads

Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler are not strangers to working together. The two actors previously shared the screen in the HBO Max miniseries “Station Eleven.” That show earned Patel an Emmy nomination for his leading role, and Deadwyler also delivered a memorable performance in the post-apocalyptic drama.

Patel brings an impressive resume to the role. He is known for his leading part in the musical film “Yesterday” and his role in Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet.” He recently appeared opposite Riz Ahmed in the Amazon series “Bait.” On the big screen, he will next be seen in Nolan’s upcoming epic “The Odyssey,” scheduled for release in July 2026.

Deadwyler has built a reputation for powerful dramatic performances. She starred in the critically acclaimed films “Till” and “The Piano Lesson.” Her television credits include roles in “Atlanta,” “The Bear,” and “P-Valley.”

What to Expect from the New Series

The official logline for the reboot describes the show simply: “Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”

Insiders confirm that Deadwyler and Patel will be playing completely new characters. They are not taking over the roles of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully from the original series. This means viewers will get a fresh story with new dynamics, rather than a simple recasting of the classic partnership.

Ryan Coogler is writing and directing the pilot episode. Coogler recently made history with his film “Sinners,” which received 16 Oscar nominations. He won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for that movie. His other directing credits include “Black Panther,” “Creed,” and “Fruitvale Station.”

Gillian Anderson’s Reaction to the Script

Gillian Anderson, who played Dana Scully in the original series, has already read the script for Coogler’s reboot. She recently spoke about the project at Awesome Con and shared her excitement.

“We’ve had a few conversations. He’s such a cool guy, and so talented. And the pilot script is really good. I would say, have an open mind and give it a chance, because it’s gonna be f—ing cool. It really is.” – Gillian Anderson

Anderson encouraged fans to embrace the new direction. She described the project as “different” and “special.” While she is not currently attached to the reboot, she left the door open for a possible appearance. She mentioned that if the phone rings with a role that feels right and the timing works, she might consider it.

Who Is Behind the Scenes

Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner and executive producer for the series. Yale has worked on shows like “See” and “The Copenhagen Test.” The original ‘The X-Files’ creator, Chris Carter, is also involved as a non-writing executive producer.

Coogler’s production company, Proximity Media, is behind the pilot. Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler serve as executive producers alongside Carter. Simone Harris is a co-executive producer. The casting for the pilot is handled by Francine Maisler, who also worked on Coogler’s film “Sinners.”

The project comes from Onyx Collective and 20th Television. Coogler and Proximity Media have a television overall deal with Disney, which owns Hulu.

The History of The X-Files Franchise

The original ‘The X-Files’ premiered on Fox in 1993. It ran for nine seasons until 2002. The show followed FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigated cases involving paranormal activity, government conspiracies, and aliens. The series became a cultural phenomenon and helped define genre television.

Two movies followed the show: “The X-Files” in 1998 and “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” in 2008. The franchise returned to television with two more seasons in 2016 and 2018, with Anderson and Duchovny reprising their roles.

This new reboot marks the first time the series will be completely reimagined with a new cast and creative team. A release date for the pilot has not been announced yet. The show will stream on Hulu once it is ready.
