A new K-drama is offering a fresh and charming take on one of Korea’s most famous folk heroes. The first episode of To My Beloved Thief introduces us to a classic tale of secret identities, social rebellion, and a very unlikely romance, all set in the Joseon dynasty. At the heart of the story is Hong Eun-jo, a kind physician hiding a dangerous second life.

The series premiered on January 3, 2026, on KBS2 in South Korea. For viewers around the world, the show is available to stream on Viki. The first episode set the stage for a romance filled with secrets and suspense, as the two main characters meet without knowing each other’s true identities.

Who Is the Mysterious Thief Gil Dong?

The episode opens not with our hero, but with her legend. In the streets and government offices, everyone is talking about Gil Dong, a mysterious thief. This isn’t just any criminal. People say Gil Dong is a “righteous thief” who only steals from the rich and corrupt, giving what is taken to help the poor. The thief has become a folk hero, but also a major problem for the authorities.

No one knows who Gil Dong really is. Rumors flyโ€”some say he’s a handsome young man, others claim he’s an old hermit, and a few even whisper he might be a monster. This mystery is what first draws the attention of Prince Yi Yeol, who is fascinated by the stories and determined to solve the case himself.

The Double Life of Hong Eun-jo

While the prince hunts for a legend, we are introduced to the very real and complex life of Hong Eun-jo, played by Nam Ji-hyun. By day, she is a dedicated physician working at the Hyeminseo, a clinic where she cares for the sick with kindness and skill. She listens to the rumors about Gil Dong with a quiet, knowing smile.

However, Eun-jo’s life is difficult. She was born to a noble father and a mother from the lowest class, which makes her a slave in the eyes of Joseon society. She works hard to support her sick father and her idle brothers, who take advantage of her. Her father, wanting a better future for her, arranges a marriage into a powerful family. Eun-jo agrees to obey him, only to make a shocking discovery: she is not to marry the young son, but the elderly, ailing father. Trapped by her family’s needs and her low social status, she feels she has no choice but to go through with it.

What her family and the prince do not know is that Eun-jo carries a huge secret. As night falls, she puts on a mask and transforms into the legendary thief, Gil Dong. Her life as a physician and her secret work as a thief are connected by the same moral codeโ€”a deep desire to help those who are suffering and to challenge a corrupt system.

Prince Yi Yeol’s Secret Mission

On the other side of this chase is Prince Yi Yeol, portrayed by Moon Sang-min. To the royal court, he appears to be a somewhat goofy prince with a quirky hobby of playing detective at the local police bureau. His family, including the Queen Dowager, is more concerned with arranging a politically advantageous marriage for him than with his crime-solving interests.

But Yi Yeol is much sharper than he lets on. His work at the police bureau is not just a game; it’s a carefully planned way for him to protect the people of Joseon while keeping his true abilities hidden from the political players in the palace. His current obsession is unmasking the thief Gil Dong, whom he believes is cleverly manipulating public opinion.

A Fateful and Misleading First Meeting

The central charm of the first episode is the moment these two destined rivals accidentally meet, while both are in disguise. After ruining his own marriage prospects on purpose, Yi Yeol is wandering the market dressed in rags. When he gets into trouble, Eun-jo, on her way home from a distressing meeting about her marriage, mistakes him for a runaway slave and bravely steps in to save him from a beating.

“She hints at her hard life but refuses to tell Yi Yeol the truth about her family. Given her silk dress, he assumes she is from a struggling noble family.”

They take shelter from the rain together, sharing a surprisingly honest conversation. Eun-jo talks about washing away her sorrows, and Yi Yeol, who has lived a sheltered royal life, is genuinely moved by her words and spirit. He is so taken with her that he arranges to meet her again, though he claims it’s to reward her for her help.

An Impulsive Kiss and a Stunning Finale

Lost in thoughts of her bleak future as she is forced to marry an old man, Eun-jo finds herself near the place where Yi Yeol asked to meet. In a moment of pure impulse and desire for one last taste of freedom, she does something shocking.

“She suddenly runs up to him and draws him in for a kiss. After the kiss, she runs away, leaving a stunned Yi Yeol to process what happened.”

Yi Yeol is completely astonished, and vows to find this bold woman again. Meanwhile, Eun-jo returns home, her heart heavy with duty. The episode ends with a powerful reveal for the audience. As Yi Yeol declares he will find her, we see Eun-jo put on her Baekjong mask and prepare for a night of work. The kind physician is gone, and the righteous thief Gil Dong emerges, ready to steal from another corrupt official.

The stage is perfectly set: the prince is now personally determined to find both the mysterious woman who kissed him and the elusive thief he is hunting, not realizing they are the very same person.
