Tom Hanks Reflects on Forrest Gump Legacy in New Film ‘Here’ with Robin Wright

Tom Hanks and Robin Wright are reuniting on screen for the generational drama Here, marking their first collaboration in 30 years since the 1994 classic Forrest Gump. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, who also helmed Forrest Gump, this reunion brings nostalgic parallels, with Hanks acknowledging similarities between their new characters and the iconic roles they played decades ago.

Revisiting Familiar Traits

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tom Hanks, who portrays Richard in Here, spoke about how both he and Wright (Margaret in the film) drew from their previous roles. Hanks noted that “some version” of their Forrest Gump characters—Forrest and Jenny—finds its way into their portrayals in Here.

“Movies are finite,” Hanks remarked, adding that they have carried elements of their iconic characters from past projects. “It’s somebody wrestling with the common sense of the moment, even though it can be a surrealistic thing.”

The actor elaborated that the new film explores a deeply personal and emotional journey, with themes reminiscent of Forrest and Jenny’s life experiences, particularly the challenges of transitioning into parenthood.

Themes of Family and Relationships

The movie Here tells the story of Richard and Margaret, high school sweethearts who marry after an unexpected pregnancy and move into Richard’s family home. However, their perspectives on life and the house diverge significantly.

While Richard views the home as a place of comfort and security, Margaret sees it as a prison, feeling trapped and yearning for escape. The official synopsis describes the film as a “generational story about families and the special place they inhabit, sharing in love, loss, laughter, and life.”

Hanks reflected on this dichotomy, explaining:

“It’s the dichotomy of Richard seeing his house as a place of solace and security and Margaret seeing this house as a prison. And yet, they love each other.”

Director Zemeckis Weighs In

Robert Zemeckis, the acclaimed director who has worked extensively with Hanks in films like Forrest Gump and Castaway, echoed the actor’s sentiments. He emphasized the significance of the film’s title, Here, which represents a central theme for each character.

“Of course, that was powerful because it took place here, and the here part, which has a different meaning to each character, is all part of the fabric,” Zemeckis explained.

Connections to Forrest Gump

The generational aspect of Here resonates with the themes of Forrest Gump, particularly the characters’ evolving roles as parents and individuals. Hanks highlighted how the storyline in Here mirrors the emotional and transformative journey seen in Forrest Gump:

“Our characters and the theme that you want to examine are about that same kind of rubicon.”

The term “rubicon,” used by Hanks, symbolizes a significant turning point, such as becoming parents or confronting life’s challenges, a recurring theme in both films.

A Complex Generational Drama

With its focus on family dynamics and the intricate relationships between characters, Here promises to be a heartfelt exploration of love, sacrifice, and identity. Hanks’ comments suggest that the film will evoke powerful emotions, drawing from the relatable struggles and triumphs of family life.

As fans of the iconic Forrest Gump eagerly anticipate this reunion, Hanks and Wright’s performances in Here are expected to bring new dimensions to their on-screen chemistry, shaped by decades of experience.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, Here is slated for release soon, inviting audiences to reflect on the meaning of family, home, and the passage of time.
