Peacock has officially renewed the action-comedy series Twisted Metal for a third season. The new season will see a major creative shift, with David Reed taking over as showrunner following the departure of the series’ original showrunner and co-creator, Michael Jonathan Smith. Reed is known for his work on popular series like The Boys and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
The renewal follows a successful second season for the post-apocalyptic series, which is based on the classic PlayStation game franchise. The show stars Anthony Mackie as John Doe and Stephanie Beatriz as Quiet, who are now set to continue their chaotic journey in the wasteland.
The New Creative Driver
David Reed is stepping in to lead the series for its next chapter. He is a WGA Award-nominated writer and producer with an extensive background in genre television. In addition to his work on The Boys and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, his writing credits include The Magicians, Aquarius, and Supernatural. He has also written novels, comic books, and video games, bringing a wealth of relevant experience to the franchise.
Reed will also serve as an executive producer on the series. He takes over from Michael Jonathan Smith, who co-created the series and led it for its first two seasons before concluding his involvement.
Story Setup for the New Season
The Season 2 finale set the stage for the upcoming conflict. The story left off with John Doe and Quiet being framed for a crime they did not commit. The mysterious tournament host, Calypso (played by Anthony Carrigan), has pinned the murder of the Twisted Metal tournament spectators on them. This false accusation has sparked a major war between the two main factions of the wasteland: the Insiders and the Outsiders.
This new conflict will form the central plot as John and Quiet are forced to fight back against Calypso’s manipulations. The post-credit scene of the Season 2 finale directly established this confrontation, ensuring a high-stakes narrative for the new season.
Behind the Scenes and Cast
The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television. The executive production team includes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (the series’ co-creators), Anthony Mackie through his Make It Gravy Productions, and Will Arnett via Electric Ave., among others.
While official casting for Season 3 has not been announced, it is expected that the core cast, including Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, and the duo of Joe Seanoa (the physical performer) and Will Arnett (the voice) as Sweet Tooth, will return.
