Pa Ranjith has released the first glimpse of his upcoming Tamil film Vettuvam, confirming it as a sci-fi action drama set across three time periods. The film stars VR Dinesh, Arya, and Sobhita Dhulipala, and is scheduled for a December 2026 theatrical release in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada.
What the World of Vettuvam Glimpse Shows
The video, titled “World of Vettuvam,” was released on September 18, 2026, by Neelam Productions. Narrated by Pa Ranjith himself, it opens by explaining that the film deals with the destruction of ancient cultures, its impact on the present, and how that impact will shape the future through natural calamities.
The glimpse presents a world where different groups, separated by time but connected by tradition, are locked in a struggle for power and authority. The narrative spans three distinct periods, linked by a common thread of martial tradition, survival, and the consequences of unchecked power.
Central to the story is Indra Vizha, a grand competition where a position of leadership is at stake. Leaders of various groups clash to secure this position, with contests rooted in traditional martial arts and combat disciplines rather than modern warfare.
“Across these three different time periods, there has been a power struggle among human beings, and this will be the central conflict of the film,” says Ranjith in the glimpse.
What Vettuvam Means and the Central Conflict
Pa Ranjith explains the meaning behind the film’s title in the glimpse. He states that Vettai (hunting) is when an animal is attacked or killed by a human being for protection or food. Vettuvam is when animals or clans of humans fight among themselves to prove their power and strength over the other.
In the film’s story, several clans fight for dominance. Every actor in the film underwent intensive training in the ancient martial arts of Adi Murai and Mal Kambh. The glimpse also introduces a major competition held during the grand Indra Vizha, where the winner receives a title and a powerful position.
“A competition will unfold in the film. Whoever emerges victorious in this sport will be assigned a powerful position. Who will come out as the winner? Will all of the destruction begin a new way of life? That’s what Vettuvam will be about,” Ranjith says in the teaser.
The Cast and Their Roles
The glimpse introduces each of the film’s primary cast members and their characters.
Arya, known for his fitness and affinity towards martial arts, plays Dharmarajan. He reunites with Ranjith after Sarpatta Parambarai, the acclaimed boxing drama set in 1970s North Madras. Shabeer Kallarakkal, who played Dancing Rose in Sarpatta Parambarai, plays Sembiyan. Kalaiyarasan, a frequent collaborator of Ranjith, plays Veeravarman. Sobhita Dhulipala plays Radhi and performs intense stunts in the glimpse. VR Dinesh, also known as “Gethu” Dhinesh, plays Nandhan.
VR Dinesh previously worked with Pa Ranjith in Attakathi, the director’s debut film. His name change from Dinesh Ravi to VR Dinesh was revealed alongside the first Vettuvam glimpse and drew attention on social media, with fans noting the rebranding ahead of his biggest project yet.
Sobhita Dhulipala returns to Tamil cinema for the first time since Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan franchise (2022, 2023). Her involvement in a Pa Ranjith film marks a significant shift from the roles she has been associated with in recent years.
The supporting cast includes Mime Gopi, Guru Somasundaram, John Vijay, Sai Dheena, Anand Saami, Harish Uthaman, Lizzy, Lingesh Prem Kumar, and Kavitha Bharathi, among others.
The Traditional Sport at the Heart of the Story
The first poster for Vettuvam featured Mallakhamba, a traditional Indian pole sport, hinting at its significance in the narrative. Mallakhamba involves gymnasts performing acrobatic and yoga-inspired movements around a stationary vertical pole, using wrestling grips to manoeuvre their bodies. The sport has a long history in India and has been associated with physical training and traditional forms of exercise.
The glimpse shows Arya, Sobhita Dhulipala, Dinesh, Shabeer Kallarakkal, and Kalaiyarasan undergoing rigorous training in Mallakhamba and self-defence techniques. Pa Ranjith’s voice-over explains that the sport is not merely part of the film’s action sequences but is tied to a larger competition that will determine who gets a position of power.
Production Team and Creative Collaborators
Vettuvam brings together several members of Pa Ranjith’s creative team. GV Prakash Kumar is composing the music. Roopesh Shaji is the cinematographer, Selva RK serves as editor, SS Murthi is the art director, and Dhilip Subbarayan choreographs the action.
Santhosh Narayanan Chenthilkumar is credited as co-writer, with Franklin Jacob handling the dialogues. The film is produced by Pa Ranjith’s Neelam Productions along with Learn & Teach Productions, with S Sai Devanand, S Sai Venkateswaran, and Ranjith producing.

Vettuvam marks Pa Ranjith’s first pan-India release, set to arrive in theatres in December 2026 in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada.
The film was first announced at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022 and has remained one of the director’s most closely watched projects. Vettuvam marks Ranjith’s eighth feature film as a director and follows his 2024 release Thangalaan, which starred Vikram.
Pa Ranjith has previously directed films including Kabali, Kaala, Sarpatta Parambarai, and Thangalaan. Kabali, starring Rajinikanth, was among the highest-grossing Tamil films at the time, with its worldwide gross estimated at over Rs 320 crore. Kaala was included in the British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound magazine list of the 25 Films of the 21st Century, making it the only Indian film on the list.
“I have built a new world in this film, and I hope the audience will like it. The film is packed with action and adventure. I have made this film as a blend of action and sci-fi, and I have high hopes that it will connect with the audience. We are planning to give viewers a completely new experience,” Ranjith said.
