Marvel Studios has revealed that the upcoming VisionQuest series for Disney+ will focus on a powerful story about family, exploring themes of fatherhood and legacy. In a recent interview, Marvel Television executive Brad Winderbaum shared new details about the show, explaining it centers on three generations and asks a difficult question. The series, which brings back Paul Bettany as Vision and James Spader as Ultron, is scheduled to debut on Disney+ in late 2026.
VisionQuest serves as the third part of a trilogy that began with WandaVision in 2021 and continued with Agatha All Along in 2024. The new series picks up with the character of White Vision, who regained his memories at the end of WandaVision and flew off to an unknown destination. Showrunner Terry Matalas, known for his work on Star Trek: Picard, is leading the creative team.
The Core Emotional Story of VisionQuest
Brad Winderbaum recently explained the heart of the VisionQuest storyline. He described the show as playing with themes of fatherhood, creating a parallel to how Agatha All Along explored motherhood. Winderbaum provided a clear look at the series’ main conflict.
“It’s really about fathers and sons and specifically about three generations of grandfather, father, son,” Winderbaum said. “Can a man who had an abusive father be a good father himself? It gets very emotional at times, and it’s an exciting adventure.”
This emotional core will unfold alongside the superhero action. Winderbaum noted that the spectacle is supported by real human stakes. The “three generations” refer directly to the characters of Ultron as the grandfather, Vision as the father, and Speed (Tommy Maximoff) as the son. This dynamic sets up a central narrative about breaking cycles of trauma.
Returning Characters and New Additions to the Cast
Paul Bettany leads the cast, returning to the role of Vision for the first time since the 2021 series WandaVision. He is joined by James Spader, who reprises the role of the sinister artificial intelligence Ultron, Vision’s creator. Showrunner Terry Matalas promised that Ultron returns in an “amazing, unique way”.
A significant part of the generational story involves Vision’s children. Actor Ruaridh Mollica joins the cast as Tommy Maximoff, also known as Speed. Tommy is the speedster son of Vision and Wanda Maximoff. His soul was placed into the teenage body of Thomas Shepherd by his twin brother, Billy Maximoff (Wiccan), at the end of Agatha All Along. His journey to find himself is expected to be a key part of the series.
The cast includes several other actors playing artificial intelligence characters from Marvel history, who appear within Vision’s mind. The confirmed cast includes:
- T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, a cunning robot driven by revenge.
- Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.D.A.Y., Tony Stark’s augmented reality security system.
- Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Stark’s personal assistant AI.
- Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E., a workshop assistant robot.
- Jonathan Sayer as U, another workshop assistant robot.
- James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S., the original AI used to create Vision.
The series also features Todd Stashwick as Paladin, a bounty hunter compared to Star Wars‘ Boba Fett, who is hunting Vision. Faran Tahir will reprise his role as Raza from 2008’s Iron Man, and Mary McDonnell has joined in an undisclosed role.
How VisionQuest Fits into the MCU Timeline and Trilogy
VisionQuest is designed as a direct continuation of stories from the earlier Disney+ series. It is officially described as the final chapter in a trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along. The show will tap into Marvel lore from the Infinity Saga, rewarding long-time fans.
The story begins with the version of Vision left at the end of WandaVision. In that series, S.W.O.R.D. rebuilt Vision into a weapon called White Vision. After a confrontation, the original Vision’s memories were downloaded into this new body. This White Vision, now holding the memories but struggling to connect with them emotionally, flew away. VisionQuest follows his journey to understand who he is.
Showrunner Terry Matalas compared Vision’s path to that of Spock in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, suggesting a story about a logical being learning to connect with his past and his humanity. Paul Bettany added that the series explores “denial of pain, and denial of your own truth, and coming to terms with who and what you are”.
