If you are looking for a show that is different from the usual TV mystery, you might want to watch Dispatches from Elsewhere. This show is about four people who find a strange game in their city. It started on AMC in 2020 and has one complete season of ten episodes. While the story wraps up in its first season, fans continue to discover its unique mix of puzzle-solving and character drama on streaming services.
The show was created by and stars Jason Segel. It is based on a real-life alternate reality game from San Francisco. The story moves to Philadelphia, where the main characters try to solve a city-wide mystery.
The Main Cast and Their Characters
The story brings together four very different people. Their journey is driven by the actors who play them.
- Jason Segel as Peter: Segel plays Peter, a man stuck in a boring job and a lonely life. He feels like something is missing. When he sees a mysterious flyer, it becomes his first step into a larger world. As the creator of the show, Segel uses Peter as a way for the audience to enter the story.
- Eve Lindley as Simone: Simone is an artist looking for inspiration and connection. Lindley brings a sense of hope and vulnerability to the role. Simoneโs relationship with Peter adds an important emotional layer to the group’s adventure.
- Sally Field as Janice: Field plays Janice, a warm-hearted retiree. She has spent much of her life caring for others and is now on her own journey of self-discovery. Her character provides wisdom and heart to the group.
- Andrรฉ Benjamin as Fredwynn: Benjamin, also known as Andrรฉ 3000, plays Fredwynn. He is a brilliant but paranoid man who believes every clue is part of a huge conspiracy. His drive to find “the truth” often pushes the group forward.
- Richard E. Grant as Octavio Coleman, Esq.: Grant plays the charming and mysterious leader of the Jejune Institute, the organization behind the game. He often speaks directly to the audience, acting as a guide who questions what is real and what is part of the game.

The Real Game That Inspired the Show
The show is not entirely made up. It is based on a real alternate reality game (ARG) that happened in San Francisco.
Creator Jason Segel found inspiration in a 2013 documentary called The Institute, which was about the Jejune Institute ARG.
From 2008 to 2011, over 7,000 people in San Francisco took part in this game. They followed cryptic flyers and puzzles that were hidden in the real city. Segel was interested in why people join these games and how they can help someone feel connected to others. For the TV show, he moved the setting to Philadelphia to use the city’s many murals and public art as a backdrop for the mystery.
Will There Be a Season 2?
Dispatches from Elsewhere was planned as a limited series. It tells one complete story over its ten episodes. In interviews after the finale, Jason Segel mentioned that if the show continued, new seasons could tell new, standalone stories. However, there has been no announcement of a second season since the show ended in April 2020.
The series was recognized with award nominations, including a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Limited Series.
