The upcoming third season of the popular show White Lotus took an unconventional approach to building on-screen chemistry. Instead of traditional “chemistry reads” between actors, the cast members, including Sarah Catherine Hook, fostered their connections through a lively and “chaotic” group chat before filming even began.
No Chemistry Reads This Time
Sarah Catherine Hook, who will play Piper in the new season, revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that there were no formal chemistry tests conducted between the actors. She explained that it was a matter of “fingers crossed we all feel like a family.” This approach is different from how casts often come together, where producers pair up actors to see if they have a natural connection that would translate well on screen.
Online Bonding Before Thailand
To build a sense of camaraderie before heading to Thailand for filming, the five actors portraying the Ratliff family decided to create a group chat. Hook described this online space as “the most chaotic group chat I had ever seen.” These initial interactions, though virtual, allowed the actors to start getting to know each other’s personalities and build a foundation for their on-screen relationships.
Real-Life Family Feel
Hook shared an amusing anecdote that highlighted the early dynamics of their group. She recalled one instance where a cast member, despite feeling unwell, still wanted to share details about a bird they had spotted. These kinds of exchanges gave Hook a positive feeling about the group’s dynamic. Once they arrived on set, Hook noted that the actors “spent every waking minute together,” further solidifying their bond.
Filming Underway in Thailand
Filming for the third season of White Lotus is currently taking place in Thailand. While specific plot details are being kept under wraps, the show is expected to follow a new group of guests at another luxurious White Lotus resort. The previous two seasons, set in Hawaii and Italy respectively, have been critical and popular successes, known for their sharp social satire and compelling characters.
Creator’s Thai Inspiration
Interestingly, the creator of White Lotus, Mike White, recently shared that Thailand wasn’t his initial choice of location for the third season. However, a personal experience in the country, where he fell ill and had a surreal, sleepless night, ultimately inspired the themes and setting for this new installment.
