The wait for answers about John Nolan’s future is finally over. ABC has officially given a green light to The Rookie for a ninth season, putting an end to weeks of fan worry. The police drama starring Nathan Fillion will continue its run, with production expected to move forward after the current season wraps up.
The renewal announcement arrived on April 13, 2026, bringing relief to viewers who have been following the show since its 2018 debut. Season 8 is scheduled to finish on May 4, 2026, meaning the gap between seasons should be similar to previous years.
The Rookie Season 9 Gets Official Green Light From ABC
Network executives confirmed the pickup alongside another fan favorite, Will Trent, which received a fifth season order. The decision places The Rookie among ABC’s stable of returning dramas, including 9-1-1, Grey’s Anatomy, and Abbott Elementary.
The show ranks eighth in average viewers among ABC’s scripted series, performing better than some already-renewed programs. This solid performance likely played a big part in the network’s decision to keep the show going.
Alexi Hawley, the show’s creator, recently shared his thoughts about continuing the story. He mentioned that the season 8 finale ends on another cliffhanger, something fans have come to expect from the series.
“I would say yes, there might be a cliffhanger at the end, potentially,” Hawley said before the renewal was official.
Where The Rookie Season 8 Stands Right Now
Season 8 kicked off on January 6, 2026, with a special episode set in Prague. The premiere showed John Nolan and his wife Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) working alongside the FBI to track down weapons traffickers. The villain Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan) also returned, causing more trouble for the LAPD team.
The season contains 18 episodes. The final four episodes began airing in mid-April, starting with episode 815 titled “Survive the Streets” on April 13. The show follows a weekly schedule on ABC every Monday at 10 p.m. Eastern Time.
One of the remaining episodes includes the show’s yearly mockumentary style episode. Hawley admitted these episodes can be “a little polarizing” but said the team enjoys making them.
The Monica storyline comes back in a big way for the final episodes. Hawley also teased that some story threads set up early in the season will return before the finale.
Cast Members Expected Back for The Rookie Season 9
The main cast is expected to return for the ninth season. Nathan Fillion will continue as John Nolan. The regular cast includes Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Richard T. Jones as Wade Grey, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen, Eric Winter as Tim Bradford, Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers, Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune, Lisseth Chavez as Celina Juarez, and Deric Augustine as Miles Penn.
Melissa O’Neil shared her feelings about the show’s uncertain future before the renewal news broke. She posted on Instagram in February as the cast wrapped filming for season 8.
“One of the wild elements of this business is that nothing is ever certain. Nothing promised is a guarantee. Season 8 has been a marathon of sorts, an ambitious adventure and the show feels stronger and more exciting than ever,” she wrote. “I sincerely hope @therookieabc gets to come back for season 9.”
Spinoff News and What It Means for the Main Show
Hawley has also been working on a potential spinoff called The Rookie: North. The pilot, starring Jay Ellis, finished shooting in late February. The show follows Alex Holland, a middle-aged man who joins the Pierce County Police Department after a home invasion changes his life.
The setting moves away from Los Angeles to Washington state, covering urban areas, suburbs, and remote rural locations. Hawley said the pilot “came out great” and the network seems happy with it.
If ABC picks up the spinoff, Hawley would need to manage both shows. He has done this before while running The Rookie and the now-ended spinoff The Rookie: Feds along with Netflix’s The Recruit. He said he has a strong team to help him handle the workload.
