NCIS: New York returned on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, with its third episode, “Carousel,” and the hour put the full team to work on a case that started as a family nightmare and turned into a federal crisis. Two young children vanished from a park carousel in broad daylight, and their mother turned out to be a Judge Advocate General prosecutor with a target on her back. The episode also moved several personal stories forward, including Nick Schaeffer’s legal trouble and Sam Hanna’s awkward reunion with someone from his past.

What Happened Previously on NCIS: New York

The second episode, “Family Business,” centered on a jewelry store robbery tied to military explosives that ended with the jeweler’s son dead. During the takedown, Nick charged into the situation alone and suffered a concussion while stopping the suspect. That impulsive move from the previous week hung over “Carousel,” as Nick’s judgment and history became part of the episode’s personal stakes.

The Carousel Kidnapping Case

Maggie Shaw and her husband Tim were arguing during a family outing when their two children disappeared from a park carousel. Maggie had stepped away for hot dogs, and Tim was distracted by his phone. A message soon arrived warning the parents to keep police out and wait at their hotel. Maggie contacted her boss anyway, which brought in the NCIS team.

The early suspicion fell on Maggie’s work as a prosecutor, since her caseload offered plenty of people with a grudge. Sean Sullivan, the team’s technical analyst, noticed that the kidnappers’ video showed the children inside a moving truck, and a bridge over the park explained why the location data looked misleading. That small technical detail shifted the search away from the carousel and toward a more complicated trail.

Tim claimed he had been texting his brother during the disappearance, but he was actually messaging Chloe Edwards, the children’s former nanny and his affair partner. Chloe had been fired weeks earlier, followed the family to New York, and knew the safety password the children were taught to use with strangers. The real organizer behind the kidnapping was a man Chloe had been talking to, who called himself Jason. His real name was Devon Lancaster, a con artist facing trial over millions tied to government contracts. Lancaster wanted Maggie’s protected witness list, and handing it over would have put other lives at risk with no guarantee the children would come home.

A new proof-of-life video led Sean to an apartment building in Queens, where Lancaster was arrested. The children were not with him. His accomplice was Lola Dambrock, a financially motivated criminal. The daughter’s severe allergic reaction became the breakthrough clue. The team traced the children to an Indian restaurant, where Dambrock fought back. Nick took her down, and Sam helped carry a child to safety. Both children received medical treatment and were reunited with their parents.

Nick Schaeffer’s Subpoena and Past Trouble

The kidnapping was not the only story running through the hour. Nick Schaeffer was subpoenaed in an NYPD investigation involving his former partner, who was accused of corruption. The episode did not suggest Nick did anything wrong, but it planted a thread about his past. The timing stood out: Nick had already walked away from the previous episode with a concussion after charging into danger alone. A character who acts on instinct now had to answer questions about his history, which gave the writers a natural way to test him.

Sam Hanna’s Difficult Reunion

Sam Hanna had a separate personal thread. A blind date that Nick set up did not go well, and Sam also tried to reconnect with a woman from his past. The episode kept that storyline brief, but it added another layer to Sam’s return to New York beyond the case of the week.

Addy, Wyatt and Sean Step Up

The episode gave meaningful work to the rest of the ensemble. Addy Ross and Wyatt Sellers went undercover as a married couple at the Shaws’ hotel, a move that showed how close they are as partners. They have only worked together for ten months, and the final scene made their friendship clear when Addy opened up to Wyatt about a personal problem and he listened without offering advice.

Sean Sullivan spent his time working through data and took the initiative to find clues, which proved crucial to moving the investigation forward. The episode spread the responsibility across the team rather than leaving Sam to solve everything alone.
