The actor opens up about how portraying Marvel’s darkest hero changed his life as a dad and a husband. Jon Bernthal first put on the skull vest as Frank Castle in 2016 for Daredevil Season 2. Now, ten years later, he is getting ready to return as The Punisher in two major projects this year. But before fans see him again on screen, Bernthal shared something personal. He said that playing this violent, broken character actually helped him become a better man in real life.

The 49-year-old actor wrote a deep statement for a reprinted version of the famous comic book The Punisher: Welcome Back Frank. The comic was written by Garth Ennis and drawn by Steve Dillon. It first came out in 2000 and is now back in print as part of Marvel’s Premier Collection. Bernthal used this chance to look back at what the last ten years have meant to him, both as an actor and as a father of three children.

“Frank Castle is not your typical hero. He is a family man who lost everything. He’s obsessed with vengeance, no matter the cost. He’s relentless and indomitable. I won’t pretend these elements don’t appeal to something deep and primal in me. Getting to play a character who harnesses ferocity in service of a greater purpose, who channels devastating loss into unwavering action, has given me the chance to explore parts of myself honestly and openly. The journey has made me a better father, a better husband, a better man.”

The Punisher’s Journey Helped Bernthal Understand Grief and Purpose

Bernthal did not want to play a superhero at first. He thought those roles were not for serious actors like the ones he looked up to. But Frank Castle was different. This character had no superpowers and no mask. He was just a father and husband who lost everything. That idea scared Bernthal, and that fear made him say yes to the part.

Over the years, Bernthal learned that The Punisher means a lot to military veterans and first responders. These fans see something real in Frank Castle. They understand his code and his refusal to give up. Bernthal said that spending time with these communities showed him the true weight of the character. He realized that what these heroes love about Frank is something that lives inside all of us.

“Soon after stepping into Frank’s boots, the veteran and first responder communities showed me the weight of what this character means. I understood immediately why Frank resonated so deeply with them. He embodies all that is righteous and good about these men and women — his commitment, his code, and his refusal to abandon the mission are the foundation of the great people who defend our freedom, and of who Frank is.”

The actor also explained that Frank Castle’s story is not just for soldiers. Parents protecting their kids see themselves in him. People who have suffered loss and needed to fight through it see themselves in him. Anyone who has ever taken a stand to make things right sees something familiar in Frank. Bernthal believes we have all carried heavy weight at some point. We have all had to push forward when things got hard. That is why he says there is a little bit of Frank in all of us.

Bernthal Writes His Own Chapter in New Punisher Special Coming to Disney+

This year is very busy for Jon Bernthal and his version of The Punisher. He will appear in two separate projects. First, he stars in The Punisher: One Last Kill, a special presentation coming to Disney+. He also co-wrote this project with director Reinaldo Marcus Green. The two had worked together before on King Richard and We Own This City. This time, Bernthal got to create his own story for Frank Castle instead of just playing someone else’s words.

The special takes inspiration from Welcome Back Frank, the comic written by Garth Ennis. Bernthal praised Ennis for not making excuses for who Frank is. Ennis does not ask readers to love The Punisher. He asks them to look at him clearly, without turning away. That honesty became the guiding light for Bernthal when he was writing One Last Kill.

“What Garth Ennis does with Frank is something I’ve tried to understand as an actor and now as a writer myself. Ennis doesn’t apologize for Frank. He subverts the hero genre by being comfortable with the ugly and gray side of heroism, finding truth in the sordid dust of desperation and anger. ‘Welcome Back, Frank’ doesn’t ask you to love Frank — it asks you to look at him clearly, without flinching.”

The Punisher: One Last Kill arrives on Disney+ on May 12, 2026. The special runs for about one hour. It is part of Marvel’s plan to tell smaller, focused stories outside of their big movies.

Frank Castle Also Returns in Spider-Man: Brand New Day This Summer

After the Disney+ special, Jon Bernthal will bring The Punisher to movie theaters for the first time. He appears in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opens on July 31, 2026. This marks the character’s first time on the big screen in more than twenty years. The last Punisher movie came out in 2008 with Ray Stevenson in the role.

Fans were worried that a PG-13 Spider-Man movie would soften Frank Castle. But Bernthal promised that will not happen. He told fans that the version of The Punisher in Brand New Day will stay true to the character. He knows how much this character means to people, and he does not want to let them down.

Bernthal also trained with Thomas Jane, who played The Punisher in the 2004 movie, to get ready for his return. The two actors worked together on gun training and other skills needed for the role. It was a passing of the torch from one Frank Castle to another.

Bernthal will not appear in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Kingpin, explained that Bernthal was too busy making his own Punisher special and hanging out with Spider-Man. Charlie Cox also confirmed this on Jimmy Kimmel Live. But the good news is that Marvel has already renewed Daredevil: Born Again for a third season. Bernthal could return for that season since his schedule is now open.
