Netflix’s new horror show Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen has grabbed viewers with its slow-building fear and sudden bursts of terror. The series, which dropped all eight episodes on March 26, 2026, follows a bride-to-be named Rachel (Camila Morrone) as she heads to her fiancé Nicky’s (Adam DiMarco) family home for their wedding. But something feels very wrong from the start.

The show comes from creator Haley Z. Boston and executive producers the Duffer Brothers (the team behind Stranger Things). What makes this horror series different is how it mixes quiet, uncomfortable moments with fast, scary sequences. The person who puts all these pieces together is editor Dev Singh. He recently spoke about how he built the fear factor for the show.

Editor Dev Singh Says It All Starts With the Writing

Singh explained that everything begins with the writing. He first read the first two episodes when he interviewed for the job. Right away, he knew this show was special.

“It all starts on the page. We got the first two episodes when interviewing for it. You get the first two episodes, and you’re like, okay, this is really interesting. I went back, and I did some research, and I found a short story, ‘This is Not For You.’ Haley must’ve written it right out of school or something, but it was really exceptional. You feel everything. She’s got a reflexive quality in her writing.”

The show moves from slow dread in the early episodes to full horror by episode seven. Singh said this change was planned from the start. The writing already had the tone built into the story structure. His job was to bring that vision to life through careful cutting and timing.

Boston’s pitch deck described the series as sitting between two classic horror films: Carrie and Rosemary’s Baby. That mix of psychological tension and outside chaos gave Singh a clear direction for how to shape each scene.

Learning Horror Timing From Martyrs Director Pascal Laugier

Singh learned a lot about horror editing from working with Pascal Laugier, the director of the extreme horror movie Martyrs. That experience shaped how he thinks about fear on screen.

“Pascal Laugier taught me so much about timing. He was a master of tension and kineticism. It was vicious, just deep, hard horror.”

Singh does not cut horror any differently than other types of shows. He lets the performance and the shooting style guide the rhythm. Then he adds tone and pressure through sound. Space and silence help create more tension. He enjoys working in that uncomfortable space where things feel just a little off.

This method is clear in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. The show does not rely on cheap jump scares. Instead, the fear comes from character moments and real feelings. The terror feels raw and real rather than overly styled.

Building a 25-Minute Found-Footage Section for Episode Four

Episode four of the series includes a long section shot like found footage. Singh said this was a bold choice that came together quickly. They had shot VHS-style footage, and director Axelle Carolyn loved it.

Singh had an idea to remove the regular intercuts and stay inside the video for 25 minutes straight. He brought this up to Boston, and she agreed right away. Within two minutes, they were reworking the whole episode.

“Haley’s like, ‘Oh, I was kind of thinking that too. Let’s do it now.’ And so, two minutes later, we’re reworking the whole thing to try and build a 25-minute section where you’re in the found footage.”

Singh gave credit to his assistant editor Mary Juric, who helped design and build the visual effects cuts. The team worked together to make this unusual episode work.

The Chaotic Long Takes of Episode Seven

Episode seven is the most intense part of the series. It uses long, continuous shots that make viewers feel trapped with the characters. Weronika Tofilska directed this episode. She called Singh a few days into shooting, worried that the single-shot approach might not work.

Singh told her to keep going. They committed fully to the idea. When Singh started editing, he thought about changing the music. Composer Colin Stetson had built themes based on the script.

The episode ends with a quiet scene between Rachel and Nicky in a bedroom. There is no music or score. Just the two actors talking for about eight to 12 minutes. Boston had said this was the most important scene in the whole series. Viewers had to believe this moment between the couple.

“Haley would always say, ‘The most important scene in the whole series is you have to believe this moment when they’re on the bed.’”

For the ending montage, Singh tried nine different music tracks. His strangest choice was “Happy Birthday.” Boston picked that one immediately. The episode ends with Stetson’s big wail cutting out, leaving viewers ready for episode eight.

Creating Terror Through Careful Timing and Restraint

Singh has been studying horror films closely. He recently watched The Killing of a Sacred Deer and timed every shot. He writes down how many lines are used in each shot, what ambient sound plays, what music is used, when it starts, and how long each shot lasts.

“Horror has this real timing signature that you want to apply to things and how long that lasts. It can be so precise. And then you want to create different timing signatures that people don’t necessarily see coming.”

This careful approach makes the scares in Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen feel earned. The show builds threat slowly. Sometimes viewers see it coming, which creates its own kind of tension. Other times, the show surprises them.

The series is now available for streaming worldwide. Viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India can watch all eight episodes on Netflix. The show also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ted Levine, Jeff Wilbusch, Gus Birney, Karla Crome, and Zlatko Burić.
