The second season of the Fox medical drama Doc ended with a major shakeup at Westside Hospital. Dr. Richard Miller, played by Scott Wolf, decided it was time to leave after a deadly virus outbreak and years of rocky relationships with his coworkers. Now, fans are asking if this is really the last they will see of the complex doctor. Executive producers have finally shared a promising update about his possible return for Doc Season 3.
A Season Finale Full of Goodbyes
The Doc Season 2 finale put the hospital staff through a terrible virus outbreak. Richard Miller was one of the first infected. During the chaos, he stepped up to help. He volunteered for an experimental drug that nearly killed him. His blood later helped save several others, including Nurse Liz, who had filed a complaint against him.
After recovering, Richard decided he had caused too much trouble. He told Dr. Amy Larsen that he thought it was best to move on from Westside. Amy, played by Molly Parker, asked him to stay. She told him everyone deserves a second chance. The show left his decision as a cliffhanger, making fans wait for Doc Season 3 to see what happens next.
What the Executive Producers Are Saying
The team behind Doc has been very honest about the future of the cast. Felicity Huffman’s character, Dr. Joan Ridley, died in the finale. Producers confirmed she will not return as a regular, though flashbacks are possible.
For Scott Wolf, the situation looks different. Executive producer Barbie Kligman told TV Insider that the team loves Richard very much. She explained they are always trying to find a place for him on the show.
“I will say that we love Richard, and because we love him so much both as an actor and personally, we’re always trying to find a place for Richard. But whether or not that is going to happen in Season 3, I’m not going to tell you.”
Co-showrunner Hank Steinberg also shared a positive view. He said they adore Scott and love the character of Richard Miller. He mentioned that if there is a natural way to bring him back, they plan to do it.

A Changing Cast for Season 3
Doc Season 3 will look a bit different when it returns. Blair Underwood is joining the cast as a series regular. He will play Dr. Ben Grant, a skilled trauma surgeon with a large ego who will clash with Amy in the operating room.
The show will also have 22 episodes for Season 3, just like the previous season. Fox has not set a premiere date yet, but it is expected to air during the 2026-2027 television season.
Why Richard Miller Is Hard to Let Go
Richard Miller started as a villain in Season 1. He was responsible for a patient’s death and tried to cover it up. However, audiences began to see a different side of him in Season 2. Even though his coworkers disliked him, he tried to fix his mistakes.
His choice to risk his life during the virus outbreak showed a desire to change. Scott Wolf’s performance made the character feel real, even when he made bad choices. This complexity is why the producers are working hard to find a story for him in Doc Season 3.
While some characters are leaving for good, Richard Miller’s story feels unfinished. Amy forgave him for his past actions. She gave him a reason to stay. Whether he accepts that offer remains a secret for now. But the producers’ comments suggest that fans have not seen the last of Scott Wolf on the show.
