The latest episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+ brought the heat with a massive monster showdown and a heartbreaking family betrayal. Episode 8, titled “Separate Ways,” aired on April 17, 2026, and it finally delivered the Godzilla vs. Titan X fight fans have been waiting for all season. But the real shock came from Kentaro Randa (Ren Watabe), who made a choice that could destroy his relationship with his sister forever.
The episode runs just under 40 minutes, making it the shortest of the season, but it packs non-stop tension, giant creature action, and a twist that changes everything. Here is everything that went down on the beaches of Northeastern Australia.
The US Government Plans to Nuke Titan X
The episode opens with Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) driving through the Australian desert toward the massive creature. Titan X (also known as Co-Cai) is on land, flailing around while tiny Scarab creatures scurry across the sand. It looks like the Titan is regenerating a lost limb.
Back at Monarch Outpost 18, Director Reddick Barris (Curtiss Cook) gets a tense call from the US Secretary of Defense. Australia is demanding help under a mutual Titan defense pact. The Secretary wants to use a tactical nuclear missile on Titan X. Barris reminds him that weapons barely work on these creatures, but the Secretary insists the technology is better now. He claims a limited strike won’t cause much radiation damage. The nukes will arrive in three hours.
Keiko (Mari Yamamoto) and Cate Randa (Anna Sawai) arrive to tell Barris about Lee’s plan. Lee wants to use a gamma radiation device to call Godzilla to the beach, hoping the King of the Monsters will fight Titan X. Barris is horrified. Two Titans fighting is worse than one. But he also has no good options.
Keiko and Cate propose a different idea. They believe Cate can communicate with Titan X using a special ability she has been developing. They want to convince the creature to leave on its own before the military or Godzilla arrives. Barris thinks it sounds crazy. But Tim (Joe Tippett) speaks up in their favor, and Barris reluctantly gives them three hours to try.
Kentaro’s Secret Deal With Apex Cybernetics
Before the mission starts, May (Kiersey Clemons) confronts Kentaro about his recent trip to Thailand. He admits he visited Isabel Simmons, the daughter of the late Apex CEO Walter Simmons. May is immediately suspicious. She knows Apex caused the disaster at Santa Soledad that killed their father.
Kentaro insists Isabel hates Apex just as much as they do. He says there is nothing to worry about. But later, alone in his room, Kentaro makes a phone call to Isabel. The audience does not hear the full conversation, but it is clear he is agreeing to something secret.
Cate tries to talk to Kentaro before the helicopter leaves for the beach. She knows he is still hurting over their father’s death. She suggests he stay behind, thinking it is too dangerous for him emotionally. Kentaro gets angry. He feels he deserves to be part of the mission. He boards the helicopter anyway.
May shares her concerns with Tim. He tells her to follow her instincts. She goes to visit Brenda Holland (Dominique Tipper), a former Apex employee now in Monarch custody. Brenda refuses to give straight answers. She just warns May to stop digging. The scene does not reveal much, but it sets up larger mysteries about what Apex is really planning.
Cate Connects With Titan X and Makes a Shocking Discovery
The helicopter carrying Keiko, Cate, and Kentaro flies toward the beach. A massive flock of birds circles above Titan X. The birds fly into the helicopter’s rotors, causing it to crash. Everyone survives. Lee runs to the crash site and is shocked to see Keiko. He tells everyone to leave immediately. Godzilla is coming.
Keiko and Cate refuse to go. They walk toward Titan X while Lee argues with Keiko. Cate approaches the massive creature. The Scarabs bury themselves in the sand. Titan X raises two large tentacles as if to strike but then calms down. Cate closes her eyes and focuses.
She connects with the Titan. And what she sees changes everything. Titan X is not attacking. She is protecting a nest. The giant hole in the sand holds an egg. The creature is a mother.
Cate shares this news with Kentaro. His reaction is not what she expects. He steps away from her and calls Isabel. He tells her to “forget the Scarabs, there is an egg.” He has been working with Apex this whole time. The mission to stop Lee and save Titan X was a cover. Kentaro’s real goal was to help Apex steal the Titan’s offspring.
Godzilla Arrives and the Battle Begins
Godzilla emerges from the ocean. The King of the Monsters is here. Titan X stands between Godzilla and her egg. The two Titans roar at each other. Then they fight.
The battle is huge. Godzilla charges and uses his atomic breath. Titan X lashes out with her tentacles. The ground shakes. Sand flies everywhere. The human characters run for cover.
As the monsters fight, Jason Trissop (Cliff Curtis) leads an Apex team onto the beach. They load the Titan X egg into a helicopter. Cate watches in horror. She realizes Kentaro lied to her. He let her believe they were saving the creature when he was really helping steal her baby.
Kentaro tries to explain. He says this is “the only way.” But Cate is heartbroken and furious. Her own brother betrayed her for the company that killed their father.
The Apex helicopter flies away with the egg. Titan X screeches and chases after it, ignoring Godzilla. The episode ends with the mother Titan running after her stolen child while Godzilla follows close behind.
Why This Betrayal Hurts So Much
This episode marks a turning point for Kentaro Randa. He has been struggling all season with his father’s death. He blamed Cate for what happened at Santa Soledad. But working with Apex crosses a serious line. Apex’s experiments with Titan technology caused the disaster that killed their father. Kentaro is now helping the same people who ruined his family.
Anna Sawai spoke about Cate’s connection to the Titans in a recent interview. She explained that Cate does not fully understand her ability. It is more of a feeling than a science. That instinct led her to trust Titan X when everyone else saw a threat. And that trust was right. The creature was only trying to protect her baby.
Kurt Russell‘s Lee Shaw spends most of the episode trying to keep everyone alive. He wanted to be alone on that beach. He was ready to die if it meant stopping Titan X. Instead, he has to watch the children of the woman he loves make terrible choices. Lee and Keiko watch the chaos from a distance as the episode ends.
