Netflix just dropped a new animated spin-off set in Hawkins, and fans are asking one big question. Does Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85 actually connect to the main show, or is it a separate story? The answer has a few layers.
The animated series arrived on April 23, 2026, bringing back Eleven, Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max for a new adventure. Because it takes place between Season 2 and Season 3, the creators had to follow strict rules so it would not mess up the original story.
The Animated Spin-Off Is Officially Canon With a Catch
Showrunner Eric Robles confirmed that Tales from ‘85 is part of the official Stranger Things timeline. The events happen in the same world, with the same characters, during the winter of 1985. That puts it right after the Snow Ball dance at the end of Season 2 and before the summer events of Season 3 when Starcourt Mall opened.
But there is an important detail to understand. The show fits into what Robles calls a “frozen time” between the two seasons. This means the characters can have new adventures without changing anything that happens later in the main series.
“We respect the audience, we respect the fans. So even though we start at the end of season 2, and technically, the hopes are, if we continue with the series, we’ll make sure that we tie it right back to the beginning of season 3.” – Eric Robles
The creative team designed the show as a self-contained adventure. You can watch it and enjoy more time with the Hawkins kids, but skipping it will not leave you confused when you watch Season 3, 4, or 5.
Why the Show’s Events Never Get Mentioned Later
One obvious question comes up when you watch Tales from ‘85. If these events actually happened, why does nobody talk about them in Season 3 or Season 4? The answer makes sense when you look at the bigger picture.
Between the winter of 1985 and the summer of the same year, things in Hawkins got much worse. Season 3 deals with the Mind Flayer taking over Billy, a secret Russian base under the mall, and people turning into melted flesh monsters. Season 4 introduces Vecna, who starts killing teenagers. Season 5 is the final battle against the biggest threat Hawkins ever faced.
Compared to all of that, the mystery from the winter of ‘85 is much smaller in scale. The characters simply had bigger problems to deal with later. Robles explained that the group faces far more dangerous threats as the show goes on, so a smaller adventure from months earlier would just not come up in conversation.
Where Tales from ‘85 Fits in the Stranger Things Timeline
The timeline placement is very specific. Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85 takes place in January 1985. That is about one month after the Season 2 finale, which happened in December 1984.
Here is a simple breakdown of the complete Stranger Things timeline:
- November – December 1983 : Stranger Things Season 1
- October – December 1984 : Stranger Things Season 2
- January 1985 : Stranger Things Tales from ‘85
- June – July 1985 : Stranger Things Season 3
- March 1986 : Stranger Things Season 4
- November 1987 : Stranger Things Season 5
The animated series takes place during a quiet moment. The gang believes the Upside Down threat is gone. They spend time playing Dungeons & Dragons, having snowball fights, and enjoying normal life. But something new starts causing trouble beneath the ice, forcing them to investigate.
What the Show Can and Cannot Do Because of Canon Rules
Because Tales from ‘85 must respect the main show’s story, the writers had some limits. The series cannot introduce any major creatures, characters, or plot points that would affect Season 3 or anything after. Everything that happens in this animated adventure stays within the winter of ‘85.
Robles admitted this was the biggest challenge when developing the show. When the Duffer Brothers came to him with the idea, he had to research carefully. He rewatched the series and thought about 80s movies to figure out how to make it work.
“Let me do some research on this. Let me really dissect the show, dig into my old memory vault of a lot of ’80s movies I used to watch, and see what I can piece together here.” – Eric Robles
The series introduces a new character named Nikki, who helps the gang solve the winter mystery. But like everything else in the show, she does not appear in the live-action seasons because her story stays contained in this frozen time period.

You Can Watch It as an Optional Extra Adventure
For fans wondering if they need to watch Tales from ‘85 before Season 5 or any other part of the main show, the answer is no. The series is completely optional. Think of it as bonus content that gives you more time with characters you love, without adding anything essential to the main plot.
All 10 episodes are now streaming on Netflix. Viewers in the United States can watch starting at 12 a.m. PT / 3 a.m. ET. A Netflix subscription is required, with plans starting at $7.99 per month for the ad-supported version and $17.99 per month for ad-free.
For fans in other regions, the release follows Netflix’s standard global rollout. Viewers in India can watch starting April 23 as well, with the show available in multiple languages including Hindi and English dubbing. UK viewers get access at the same time, which is 8 a.m. BST. Australia viewers can start watching from 5 p.m. AEST on April 23.
The animation comes from Flying Bark Productions, with Robles as showrunner and the Duffer Brothers as executive producers. The voice cast features new actors rather than the original live-action stars, including Brett Gipson, Luca Diaz, and Elisha Williams.
Tales from ‘85 is officially canon, but it exists in its own bubble. It respects everything that happened before and after. If you just want to see the Hawkins gang have another spooky adventure without worrying about timeline rules, that is exactly what this show delivers.
