Popular ABC police drama The Rookie Season 8 Episode 17 just aired, and two major storylines reached their breaking point. Monica Stevens met a violent end, while Liam Glasser delivered a chilling promise to John Nolan.
The April 27 episode, titled “Dead Ringer,” closed the door on Bridget Regan’s corrupt lawyer character after four seasons of causing trouble for the LAPD. The hour also gave Nolan (Nathan Fillion) a win in court against the serial killer Glasser (Seth Gabel), but the victory carried a dark warning.
Here is everything that went down in The Rookie Season 8 Episode 17.
The Rookie Season 8 Episode 17: Monica’s Luck Finally Runs Out
For years, fans watched Monica Stevens escape prison, survive assassination attempts, and talk her way out of trouble. That ended on Monday night.
In “Dead Ringer,” Monica tried to play both the FBI and a violent arms dealer named Cooper Johnson to secure her escape from Los Angeles. She asked her old partner Aidan Warner for an exit package involving a private plane. But Aidan gave her only 24 hours to deliver Cooper.
When Monica realized the Feds had found her secret files and were deleting her leverage, she knew she had to run immediately. Before leaving for the airport, she removed her disguise and visited her ex-husband, Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore).
“She needs to be herself for their conversation. By the end of the night, she’ll be gone or dead.” – Bridget Regan on her character’s final scene
Monica asked Wesley if he ever truly loved the person she was before she changed. Wesley admitted he did, calling that version of her “terrifying, radiant, and razor-sharp.” She kissed his cheek and walked away.
A rideshare picked her up, but the driver passed the LAX exit. The car stopped on a remote road. Monica made one request: “not in the face.” She was shot twice in the chest and left on the side of the road.
Tim (Eric Winter), Nyla (Mekia Cox), Angela (Alyssa Diaz), Grey (Richard T. Jones), and Garza (Felix Solis) arrived at the crime scene. Wesley joined them shortly after to see Monica’s body.
Why Bridget Regan Wasn’t Surprised
The actress said she knew this day would come. Monica had survived too many close calls.
“She’s not on her ninth life. She’s on her 37th. She’s escaped multiple assassinations and prison time and being thrown in a wood chipper. When her number was finally up, I wasn’t surprised.” – Bridget Regan
Regan admitted she felt sad for Monica, not because she died, but because she never truly turned back to the light. “She actually succumbed to the dark side and couldn’t find her way back,” Regan said.
The Rookie Season 8 Episode 17: Glasser Loses Custody But Delivers a Warning
While Monica’s story ended, Liam Glasser got a different kind of closure. Nolan and Nyla tracked down Glasser’s ex-wife Miranda and her kids before a critical custody hearing.
Miranda had run away because she feared the court would give Glasser, a known serial killer, rights to see his children. Nolan and Nyla convinced her to return and fight.

Because Nolan was on medical leave from active duty, the judge asked him to take the stand. Glasser’s dirty lawyer, Malcolm (Sean Patrick Thomas), tried to break Nolan during cross-examination. But Nolan held his ground. He told the judge that Glasser was dangerous and had even tried to kill a police officer.
The judge believed Nolan. Miranda received full custody of her children. Glasser was hit with a restraining order barring him from any contact with the kids.

Glasser’s Final Warning to Nolan in The Rookie Season 8 Episode 17
As Nolan and Glasser parted ways outside the courthouse, Glasser did not seem defeated. Instead, he hinted that things would now get worse.
“Whatever happens next, it’s on you.” – Liam Glasser to John Nolan
Without his children as a distraction, Glasser suggested he would have more time to continue his violent activities. He blamed Nolan for the outcome, implying that any future deaths would be Nolan’s responsibility.
Tim Bradford Picks the Perfect Ring
Not every moment in “Dead Ringer” was dark. Aaron Thorsen (Tru Valentino) returned and helped Tim find an engagement ring for Lucy Chen.
Aaron introduced Tim to his jeweler, Pierre (Michael Nouri), who asked Tim to describe Lucy. Tim spoke about how Lucy loves helping people and hearing their stories. He admitted she makes him feel loved in a way he never thought he deserved.
Pierre brought out vintage rings. Tim picked one that belonged to a couple who were friends for years before realizing they were in love. They faced obstacles but stayed together for over 50 years.
“That says forever to Tim.” – Episode recap
Angela and Tim’s mother Joy (Sela Ward) were there to support him. The proposal is now set to happen soon.

Celina’s Phone Causes Trouble
Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) had a rough night. Her broken phone sent accidental voice messages all over town. One message made her boyfriend Rodge think she was about to propose to him. Another message almost ruined Tim’s surprise for Lucy.
The confusion was played for laughs, but some fans felt the show dragged out the joke too long. Others wished the writers had used the moment to actually move Celina and Rodge’s relationship forward instead of treating it as pure comedy.
What Happens Next
The Season 8 finale airs on ABC on May 4, 2026. Monica’s death removes one major threat, but Glasser is still free. His final words to Nolan suggest the serial killer will return. Tim now has the ring, so the long-awaited Chenford proposal could happen in the finale. Aaron is back in Los Angeles, and fans hope he will stick around.
