The Rookie Season 9 is coming back with a two-part premiere on Wednesday, January 6, 2027, and the show’s creator Alexi Hawley has shared new details about what happens to Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) after the shocking Season 8 finale.

The couple got engaged on a beach, then were kidnapped seconds later by people working for crime boss Heath Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise). The new season picks up one to two weeks after that moment.

Chenford Starts Season 9 in Serious Danger

Hawley said the two-part premiere will focus on the rescue mission. Tim and Lucy will not just sit and wait to be saved. They will fight back.

“It’s super fun, romantic, emotional, and packed with a lot of action,” Hawley shared about the Season 9 premiere script. “We are definitely going to figure out where they are, figure out how to get them back, and throw whatever obstacles we can put in their way on that journey.”

The cast has also talked about the couple being held apart. O’Neil said it would be interesting to see them separated and dealing with the situation on their own.

“It would be great to see them separated, and kind of dealing with that on their own would be really interesting,” O’Neil said. “Also, if he’s trying to torture Bradford, what better way to do that than to have his fiancée completely out of sight?”

Winter agreed and said Tim and Lucy should be held in different locations to raise the stakes. He explained that if they are together, they can work as a team. Being apart makes escape much harder for each of them.

A Mysterious Villain Is Pulling the Strings

Hawley also teased that Everett is not working alone. A mysterious “right-hand person” is operating behind the scenes and pulling the strings of the whole operation. This person will be a bigger threat for the Mid-Wilshire team in Season 9.

The showrunner confirmed that Tim and Lucy will act instead of waiting to be rescued. Wherever they are being held, they will try to escape.

What the Cast Has Said About the Rescue

Melissa O’Neil said Lucy is the type of person who can think clearly when things get really bad. She said Lucy will likely be methodical during the crisis and fall apart afterward.

Nathan Fillion, who plays John Nolan, joked at New York Comic Con that he hopes Tim and Lucy make it.

Lisseth Chavez, who plays Celina Juarez, said her character will not stop until they find answers.

Mekia Cox, who plays Nyla Harper, called Tim and Lucy family and said Nyla has a special place in her heart for both of them.

Richard T. Jones, who plays Wade Grey, said Grey sees them as his kids and will do everything to get them back.

New Faces Joining Season 9

Hawley announced at New York Comic Con that Troian Bellisario and Dulé Hill are joining the cast in guest roles.

Bellisario will play Stevie, a single mother of two who is trying to restart her life after a painful divorce. She becomes Nolan’s new rookie. Bellisario previously directed a Season 8 episode of the show.

Hill will play a new watch commander named Lt. Hughes, a 30-year veteran of the job who is dealing with personal problems.

Molly Kunz will also guest star as Quinn, a small-town girl determined to become an EMT in Los Angeles.

Hawley confirmed that Nathan Fillion, Melissa O’Neil, and Eric Winter will all make crossover appearances on the spinoff during its first season.

Behind the Scenes Look at Tim Bradford

Eric Winter shared behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram showing how the makeup team made Tim Bradford look beaten and brutalized for the Season 9 premiere. He praised the makeup department for their work.

“How it started ——> how it ended,” Winter wrote in the caption. “You don’t want to miss our Rookie season premiere Jan 6th!! Big shout out to our incredible make up dept for making this happen…”

An Alternate Ending Was Filmed

Winter revealed at San Diego Comic-Con that the cast did not know if the show would return when they finished Season 8. They filmed an alternate ending in case the series was cancelled.

“We didn’t know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back,” Winter explained.

He did not reveal what happened in that alternate version, saying it would be a spoiler. ABC renewed the show in April 2026, before Season 8 finished airing, so the cliffhanger ending was used instead.

Extended Cut Available on Hulu

A special extended cut of Season 8 Episode 10, titled “His Name Was Martin,” is available on Hulu. It adds about five and a half minutes of footage, including a deleted scene where Tim comforts Lucy after a difficult moment on the job.
