Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is again under major heat after a risky joke about Melania Trump led to public firing requests from both the First Lady and President Donald Trump. The situation escalated quickly following a real-life security scare at the recent White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

The controversy started during a parody segment on April 24, 2026. Kimmel pretended to host the White House correspondents’ dinner. During the bit, he looked at a photo of Melania Trump and said she had “the glow of an expectant widow”. The joke played on the significant age gap between the President (nearly 80) and the First Lady.
A Real Security Scare Changes Everything
Just two days later, on April 26, a gunman tried to enter the ballroom where the actual White House Correspondents’ Dinner was taking place in Washington D.C.. The suspect was reportedly carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. This real event gave the joke a much darker meaning.
Following the security scare, both Donald and Melania Trump went public with their anger. The First Lady released a rare public statement calling Kimmel’s language “hateful.” She wrote on social media that “people like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate,” demanding that ABC “take a stand”.
President Trump was even more direct. He called the joke “shocking” and “a despicable call to violence.” He made his demand very clear, stating, “Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC”.
Kimmel Fires Back Instead of Apologizing
Instead of backing down, Kimmel addressed the situation on his show the following Monday night. He defended the joke, calling it “a very light roast” about the age difference in the Trump marriage.
“It was not — by any stretch of the definition — a call to assassination. And they know that.”

Kimmel joked that waking up to a statement from the First Lady demanding he be fired is a normal experience, sarcastically telling the audience, “We’ve all been there, right?”. This refusal to apologize has kept the controversy alive.
Fans Are Deeply Divided Online
Social media exploded with reactions. Some viewers are furious, saying Kimmel went too far and incited violence.
“Jimmy Kimmel is the most vile, untalented talk show host in the history of Late Night Comedians. He relies on his political ridicule to amuse his ‘audience.’ He’s a washed up has been host that should of been canceled long ago.”

However, Kimmel also has strong support. Many fans believe he was simply telling a joke and that the timing of the security incident was a coincidence.
“Jimmy Kimmel is a national treasure.”

ABC Already Made a Decision About His Future
Despite the current calls for his termination, recent history shows ABC is standing by Kimmel. This is not the first time the President has asked the network to fire the host. Last fall, Kimmel was suspended for comments about the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

At 58 years old, Kimmel has joked that he likes taking time off. But he has also signaled that he wants to end his career on his own terms, not because of political pressure. ABC and parent company Disney have not commented on the latest firing demands, but the existing contract suggests the host is not going anywhere soon.
