The final season of Hacks keeps delivering big moments. On April 30, 2026, HBO Max released two episodes back-to-back. Episode 4 and Episode 5 of Hacks Season 5 take the characters on very different paths. Jean Smart‘s Deborah Vance goes to jail after a public meltdown. Hannah Einbinder‘s Ava Daniels finally figures out what to do with her career.
Both episodes aired at 9:00 p.m. ET as part of a special double-episode midseason release. The show is now past the halfway point of its final run, which will end on May 28.
Deborah’s Paley Center Speech Leads to Handcuffs
Episode 4 centers on a 50th anniversary celebration for Who’s Making Dinner? at the Paley Center. This was the sitcom Deborah created with her ex-husband Frank back in the day. But here is the problem: Frank took the official creator credit. He told Deborah he would put her name on the second episode. She believed him. That never happened.
At the event, Deborah finds out the stage will be renamed the Frank Vance Stage. That pushes her over the edge. She has a gag order from her legal fight with Bob Lipka. She is not supposed to speak publicly. But she grabs the microphone anyway.
The speech does not go well. The audience does not laugh. They sit in awkward silence. But then something unexpected happens. The event plays an old unearthed Frank interview. Everyone expects him to say something mean about vance. Instead, he says she was always the funniest person in the room. He admits she was the real talent behind their success.
“Guilt looks good on you.” – Ava to Deborah
That hits Deborah hard. She cannot handle hearing nice things from the man who stole her credit. After the event, police arrest her for violating the restraining order. The best part? In jail, surrounded by other women, she finally tells jokes that land. The inmates laugh. She pays everyone’s bail before leaving.
Ava Decides to Reboot Who’s Making Dinner?
While Deborah deals with her past, Ava gets a big opportunity. An executive named Jessica Duncan liked her Mall Girl script. But the meeting does not go as planned. The executive says the script is too original and specific to actually make.
Ava needs a new idea. At the Paley Center, she looks at all the old Who’s Making Dinner? memorabilia. Then it clicks. She will reboot the show. Her pitch: a grandchild inherits the family home but needs roommates to afford it. She calls it “downward mobility, but funny”.
There is one problem. Frank left the rights to his sister Kathy, played by J. Smith-Cameron. Kathy refuses to give Ava the rights unless Deborah gives her their mother’s salt and pepper shakers. Deborah says no. So Ava steals them. She takes the shakers to T.L. Gurley, the antique dealer from Season 1, and asks him to make fakes. He agrees if she sends Marcus as a customer. Ava gives Kathy the fake shakers. Kathy loves them and signs the deal.
Deborah and DJ Finally Connect on The Amazing Race
Episode 5 is called “D’Amazing Race.” This is the episode fans have been waiting for. The show teased a possible Amazing Race crossover all the way back in Season 2. Now it happens.
DJ, Deborah’s daughter played by Kaitlin Olson, always wanted to compete on the show. Deborah made a promise years ago: if DJ got sober, they would do it together. DJ stayed sober. Now Deborah has to keep her word.
The episode follows them as they run around doing challenges. There is physical comedy. A wheel of cheese knocks DJ down. Deborah complains about everything. But underneath the jokes, something real happens. They actually talk. They bond.
By the end, Deborah realizes she wants to protect DJ from the resentment and hurt that shaped her own life. It is a big moment for both characters. DJ walks away with more confidence. Deborah lets go of some guilt.

Episode 4 forces Deborah to face the truth. She spent decades angry at Frank. But his post-death compliment shakes her. Ava tells her that the reason people pay attention is simple: she is funny. That is all she needs to be.
Episode 5 pushes Ava forward. She now has the rights to reboot Who’s Making Dinner?. That will be her focus for the remaining episodes. Meanwhile, Deborah still has her Madison Square Garden show to prepare for. Her arrest creates new problems. But she also found her voice again in that jail cell.
The season continues with another double-episode drop on May 7 (Episodes 6 and 7). Then single episodes on May 14 (Episode 8), May 21 (Episode 9), and the series finale on May 28.
