The second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has wrapped up its run on Apple TV+, and the finale did not hold back. While the main story focused on the emotional return of Titan X and her egg to Axis Mundi, the episodeโ€™s final moments gave fans a look at a very familiar, fiery face.

In the closing scene of Episode 10, Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell) travels to a remote forest in Thailand. There, standing atop an active volcano, is Rodanโ€”the massive winged Titan making his official debut in the series timeline.

What is Rodan? The Flying Titan Explained

For those new to the Monsterverse, Rodan is a giant pterosaur-like creature. He first showed up in the 2019 film Godzilla: King of the Monsters. But his history in movies goes way back to the original 1956 Japanese film, Rodan.

In the Monsterverse, Rodan is often called the “Fire Demon.” He sleeps inside volcanoes, using the magma to stay dormant. When he wakes up, his wings can cause massive storms, and his sheer speed breaks the sound barrier. VFX Supervisor Sean Konrad confirmed that the Rodan seen in the show is the exact same design from the movie King of the Monsters. The team chose not to change his look because the original design was already a hit with fans.

Here are a few quick facts about the Titan:

  • Species: Giant Pteranodon-like Titan
  • Signature Trait: Covered in magma and volcanic rock; creates storms when he flies
  • First Film Appearance: Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
  • Loyalty: Initially served King Ghidorah but bowed to Godzilla after Ghidorahโ€™s defeat

Why is Rodan in Thailand in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2 Finale

The show takes place right after the 2014 Godzilla movie but before King of the Monsters. In the films, Monarch finds Rodan sleeping inside a volcano in Mexico. However, in the Monarch season 2 finale, Lee Shaw spots the Titan resting in a volcano in Thailand.

This does not break the movie’s story. The Monsterverse has shown that Titans move around. It is likely that Rodan simply migrated or was drawn to a different volcanic site before eventually being contained in Mexico. The show uses this moment to set up a potential third season, teasing that Rodan is the next big threat (or ally) on the board.

Sean Konrad shared that filming that final scene with Kurt Russell was one of the last things the crew did. They searched for a long time to find the perfect spot in Thailand that had a good view of a volcano.

What Happens Next? Setting Up Season 3

The introduction of Rodan serves a bigger purpose than just a quick scare. It tells the audience exactly where the story is going.

While Titan X has returned to her realm, the humans are still causing trouble. Kentaro and Isabel Simmons have not given up their plan to exploit the Titan realm (Axis Mundi). In the finale, it is revealed they are looking for Rodan specifically. They believe he has the power to open rifts in the world, which they want to use to find a lost loved one.

Tory Tunnell, the Executive Producer, talked about the fiery Titanโ€™s arrival. โ€œWe are excited about the possibilities of Rodan,โ€ Tunnell said. โ€œAnd we donโ€™t oversell his story in the finale; we just give you the mystery. That gives us the opportunity in the writersโ€™ room to really build something thatโ€™s going to be magnificent.โ€

While Apple TV+ has not officially confirmed a third season yet, ending the finale on a shot of Rodan pretty much guarantees that the Fire Demon will play a major role if the show returns. The writers are clearly building toward a story where humans try to control this dangerous creature.
