The Yellowstone universe keeps growing, and the latest spin-off Marshals just brought in a familiar face from Desperate Housewives. Brenda Strong has joined the cast as Samantha, the mother of Arielle Kebbel‘s character Belle Skinner. Her arrival in Episode 10 dropped a bombshell about Belle’s past that changes everything fans thought they knew about the tough U.S. Marshal.
The episode, which aired on May 3, 2026, showed a prison bus crash that forced Belle to face the mother she left behind years ago. Samantha is not just any prisoner on that bus. She is serving time for a mining disaster that destroyed their family and their hometown.
Belle’s Hidden Past Comes Crashing Into the Open
Before this episode, viewers only knew Belle Skinner as a sharp, capable member of Kayce Dutton‘s task force. She seemed like someone who had her life together. But Episode 10 revealed that “Belle Skinner” is not even her real name.
She changed her name and left her old town behind because of what her mother did. Belle’s family owned a mine. According to the episode, Samantha ignored safety rules, which caused a disaster that killed many workers. When the authorities came after the family, Samantha let her husband take all the blame.
Belle’s father paid money to the victims’ families to try to make things right. But the shame and pressure became too much for him. Belle revealed in the episode that she was the one who found her father’s body after he took his own life. She blames her mother completely for his death.
A Tense Reunion Between Mother and Daughter
When the prison bus crashed during a rockslide, Samantha suffered a severe leg fracture. Belle and her partner Andrea (Ash Santos) stayed behind to help the survivors. Belle did not want to tell Andrea who Samantha really was at first. But the truth came out when Belle refused to help the injured woman.
Andrea had to step in and treat Samantha’s injuries. She reminded Belle that as a U.S. Marshal, she has a duty to save lives, no matter how she feels personally. Belle eventually helped her mother, but the anger and pain were clear on her face the whole time.
“Belle was forced to help save her mother’s life on the bus after she sustained life-threatening injuries. One of the prisoners on board was a doctor, and he walked her through the steps.”
The episode ended with Samantha apologizing to Belle. She asked if she could be part of her daughter’s life again. Belle did not give a clear answer, leaving their relationship open for future episodes.
Who Is Brenda Strong?
Brenda Strong has been acting for over four decades. She is best known for playing Mary Alice Young on Desperate Housewives, the narrator who spoke from beyond the grave. That role made her a household name in the 2000s.
Her other credits include Starship Troopers, Spaceballs, and more recently Chicago Med where she played Dr. Suzie Mankiewicz. She also appeared in the HBO Max series Rooster earlier this year. Strong has two upcoming projects lined up called Song of the Bigfoot and The Venery of Samantha Bird.

Only three episodes remain in Marshals Season 1. The show has already been renewed for Season 2 by CBS, so there is plenty of time to explore Belle and Samantha’s complicated relationship further.
Episode 10 also dealt with Kayce Dutton‘s past. One of the escaped prisoners was Neil Lamb, a former ranch hand at Yellowstone who knew Dutton family secrets. Kayce tried to shoot him to keep him quiet, but his partner Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) stopped him.
The episode balanced Belle’s emotional family drama with Kayce’s desperate attempts to protect his family’s legacy. Marshals continues to air Sundays at 8/7c on CBS and streams the next day on Paramount+.
