The first season of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord just wrapped up on Disney+ , but fans are already asking the big question. When will Season 2 arrive? The man behind the voice of the former Sith Lord, Sam Witwer, has given a hopeful answer about the show’s return.

Witwer recently spoke about the release timeline for the next chapter. According to the actor, viewers will not be stuck waiting for years to see what happens next with the Dathomirian warrior.

“It’s the usual development cycle… I know when it’s coming out, but it’s not a situation where the audiences will have to wait too, too long,” Witwer explained in an interview.

He added that while he is aware of the specific premiere date, his lips are sealed for now. “But I think I am forbidden from saying what I know, but we are working on it. We’ve been working on it for a while, and it’s interesting,” Witwer said.

Season 2 Already Confirmed Before Series Premiere

The good news about the show’s future came very early. Lucasfilm and Dave Filoni announced that Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2 was in the works before the first episode of Season 1 even aired on April 6, 2026.

This early renewal showed that the streaming service and the animation studio had high hopes for the series. The show follows Maul as he tries to build his criminal group on a planet the Empire has not touched. He also finds a young Jedi Padawan who might become his new apprentice.

Voice Actor Shares Details About Production

Sam Witwer has a long history with this character. He voiced Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. He said the whole team feels a strong need to move quickly on the new episodes.

According to Witwer, “the entire team, myself included, feels a tremendous responsibility to slam our foot into the gas and keep it moving”. This suggests that work on Season 2 is already well past the early planning stages.

The show has been a hit with both critics and viewers. It holds a very high score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans have praised the look of the show, with one viewer saying, “the animation is amazing, I’m surprised how much money they pumped into this show, because this feels like Pixar or Sony level animation”.

Dave Filoni Connects Show to George Lucas Ideas

The story of Maul – Shadow Lord is very personal for creator Dave Filoni. He shared that the show pulls from old talks he had with George Lucas about the character’s path.

“Maul is a character that’s our responsibility. George [Lucas] and I had had some talks about Maul over the years and what his plans for Maul had been,” Filoni explained. He added that making the show was “a way of honoring that future that we were going to have and finally bringing some of it to light”.

Release Timeline Compared to Other Star Wars Shows

While Sam Witwer says the wait will not be “too, too long,” fans are looking at past Star Wars animated shows for clues. The Bad Batch had about two years between its first and second seasons.

Given that the team working on Maul has already been active for a while, a release in 2027 seems possible. However, Lucasfilm Animation has not given a hard date for Season 2 yet.

What to Expect from the Next Season

Season 2 will keep following Maul as he moves through the criminal world. The first season set up a major clash between Maul and the Empire’s Inquisitors. It also explored the dark connection between Maul and the young Jedi Devon Izara.

Sam Witwer recently talked about that relationship. He found it funny that some fans were complaining about not seeing Maul train someone yet. “He’s training [Devon], whether she likes it or not,” Witwer said. He described this as a “very dark and scary way of looking at it”.

The voice cast for the show includes Sam Witwer as Maul, Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, and Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, among others.

For now, fans can re-watch Season 1 of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord on Disney+. All ten episodes are streaming now as the animation team keeps working on the next chapter.
