The latest chapter of the dark British drama Half Man just dropped, and it is a heavy one. Episode 4 jumps fourteen years into the future, showing that getting rid of a toxic brother does not automatically fix a broken life.

The episode aired on May 15, 2026, on BBC iPlayer (and on May 14 on HBO/Max in the US). It brings the estranged brothers back together in the most painful way possible. While one brother has rebuilt his life, the other is stuck in a cycle of denial, debt, and dangerous hookups.

Niall’s Life Falls Apart Without Ruben

Viewers expecting Niall (now played by Jamie Bell in the adult timeline) to thrive after sending Ruben to prison are in for a rude awakening. He dropped out of Oxford University. His first novel failed. He is living with his mother, Lori, and stealing books from the library just to get by.

To cope with his loneliness and failure, Niall turns to secret hookups with men in parking lots and library bathrooms. But he insists these acts mean nothing. He tells himself—and anyone who asks—that he is not gay because he does not love these men. The episode paints a picture of a man who is deeply lost and refusing to be honest with himself.

The Shocking News That Breaks Him

Niall’s fragile world shatters when he runs into an old school bully named Gus. Gus casually mentions that he saw Ruben a few days ago. Niall rushes home to find out that Ruben was released from prison two years ago. His mother knew. His old girlfriend Joanna knew. They kept it a secret.

The worst part is not just the secret. It is what Ruben has done with his freedom. Niall discovers that Ruben (played by series creator Richard Gadd) has a six-figure job, a nice house, a nice car, and a wife named Mona. Meanwhile, Niall is broke, single, and being blackmailed by a librarian who caught him on hidden camera.

“It kills you, doesn’t it? To know that even in my absence, with all the f***ing opportunities at your feet, all you’ve done is kick up dust.” – Ruben to Niall in the hospital

The Violent Hospital Confrontation

Niall tries to steal the badge off Ruben’s Mercedes but crashes his car while fleeing. He wakes up in a hospital bed with Ruben standing over him. What follows is the most intense scene of the series so far. Ruben violently attacks Niall, shoving his fist into Niall’s wound and screaming insults about his wasted life.

But Niall fights back with words. He admits he is bitter. He says he has spent 13 years terrified that Ruben would punish him for lying in court. That fear was so crippling that he had a mental breakdown and dropped out of school. For the first time, Ruben seems to understand the damage he caused.

They end the fight with a hug. It is not a happy reunion. It feels like two people who are addicted to each other’s chaos. Ruben agrees to pay off the blackmailer. For a moment, it looks like they might finally move on.

The Ending That Changes Everything

Just when the episode seems to offer hope, the story snaps back to the wedding day from the very first episode. Ruben finishes his toast to Niall and Alby. But then the police break into the barn.

Medics wheel out a stretcher covered with a white sheet. When the sheet is pulled back, the dead body is Ruben. He is staring blankly at the ceiling with a slight smirk on his face.

The show just revealed the ending in the middle of the story. Creator Richard Gadd explained that he wanted to twist the timeline again. He wanted to surprise the audience by showing the final moment early. In a show that plays with unusual structure, it felt like the right move.

Fans on social media are reacting strongly to the twist. One viewer wrote that Jamie Bell and Richard Gadd are both incredible in this, calling the hospital scene a masterclass. Another said if Jamie Bell does not win an Emmy for this performance they will be very upset. A third fan expressed confusion, asking where the current storyline goes from here and if the next episode will be Ruben’s funeral.

Gadd has refused to confirm if Ruben is really dead, telling reporters with a smile that he could not possibly say. With two episodes left, audiences will have to wait to see how the story reaches that bloody conclusion.
