Daisy’s risky lie leads to a brutal murder, leaving a young girl’s fate uncertain heading into the Hulu drama’s first season finale.
The penultimate episode of The Testaments Season 1, titled “Marat Sade,” arrived on Hulu on May 20, turning up the tension in Gilead to a breaking point. The hour follows Daisy (Lucy Halliday) as she makes a dangerous choice to trap the predatory Dr. Grove (Randal Edwards). But her actions cause something much bigger than she expected, leading her friend Becka (Mattea Conforti) to commit a shocking act of violence that changes everything.
This episode is currently available for streaming. Viewers in the USA can watch on Hulu. UK audiences can find it on Prime Video with the MGM+ add-on, while Canadian viewers watch on Crave. In Australia, the series is available on Binge and Foxtel. The season finale is set to release on May 27.
Daisy Rings the Bell to Become a Plum
Daisy makes a huge decision at the start of the episode. After learning that Dr. Grove assaulted Agnes (Chase Infiniti) and Hulda (Isolde Ardies), she decides to stop waiting for justice. She rings the bell at school, announcing to the Aunts that she has started her period. In Gilead, this news officially makes her a “Plum”—a girl ready for the marriage market. The Aunts celebrate the news and dress her in the purple uniform.
Becka immediately feels uncomfortable. She notices that Daisy is getting close to Agnes. Becka warns Agnes that Pearl Girls are spies, but Agnes does not want to listen. Becka feels even more left out when she realizes everyone else already knew about Daisy’s secret. Her loneliness sets the stage for the tragedy to come.
Daisy Falsely Accuses Dr. Grove to Save Her Friends
Daisy gets an appointment with Dr. Grove sooner than she thought. Agnes volunteers to go with her for support. Inside the room, Daisy waits for the dentist to try something wrong. But Dr. Grove is smarter than that. He knows Pearl Girls come from the outside world and are harder to trick. He acts completely professional and does not touch her.
Daisy refuses to give up. She rips open her blouse, screams, and runs out of the room. She tells the Aunts that Dr. Grove assaulted her. Aunt Vidala tries to convince Daisy she is confused, but Daisy stands her ground. She gives a very detailed account of the fake attack.
Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) asks to speak with Daisy alone. Aunt Lydia immediately understands that Daisy is lying because Dr. Grove would never be that careless with witnesses outside. Instead of punishing Daisy, Aunt Lydia decides to use the lie to get rid of the dangerous dentist. She tells Daisy that justice will be served.
Commander Judd agrees to punish Dr. Grove, but he asks to wait until after Becka’s wedding so the daughter does not suffer for the father’s crimes. Judd seems more upset about losing a good dentist than about the girls who got hurt.
Becka Learns the Truth About Her Father
Dr. Grove comes home late and tells his family about the accusation. Becka is furious the next morning. She tries to attack Daisy at school, but Agnes pulls her away. Agnes takes Becka outside and tells her the hard truth: her father did the same thing to her.
This news destroys Becka. She trusted her father her whole life. She had no idea he was hurting her friends during their dental appointments. Agnes asks Becka if she was also a victim, and Becka is completely shocked. She realizes this is why Agnes has been avoiding her house.
“That was such an emotional day. Chase and I, we were very invested, and we got genuinely sad in that scene because it’s such a hard scene to shoot and to discuss. But she’s of course going to take Agnes’s side over her father’s. She loves her so much, and she wants the best for her, she wants to protect her, she wants to be there for her. So, Agnes’s word is very truthful to her.” – Mattea Conforti (Becka) on learning the truth about her father.
Becka Murders Her Father in the Bathtub
Becka sits at dinner with her parents that night. She asks her father if he hurt the Pearl Girl. He says no, but he only mentions the “Pearl Girl.” He does not deny hurting others. Becka understands that Agnes was telling the truth.
Something inside Becka snaps later that night while she arranges flowers. She picks up a pair of garden shears and walks into the bathroom where her father is lying in the tub. She stabs him repeatedly in the chest. The water turns red. Becka drops the shears and walks out covered in blood.
Becka puts on a Martha’s coat and takes a bus to Agnes’s house. She arrives with blood all over her nightgown. She tells Agnes she did “divine justice.” Becka is proud of what she did because the Aunts always taught that violent men deserve violent punishment.

Agnes helps clean Becka up. Becka talks about how the shears felt when they went into her father’s chest. She asks Agnes to run away with her like they talked about before. Agnes pretends to agree.
But Agnes told her parents what happened. She thought they would send a doctor to help Becka, who was clearly having a mental breakdown. Instead, Commander MacKenzie (Nate Corddry) calls the Eyes, Gilead’s secret police. Garth (Brad Alexander) arrives to take Becka away.
Becka thinks she is going to a hospital. But when the van door opens, the Eyes grab her and throw her inside. She screams for Agnes as the van drives away. Agnes watches in horror, realizing her father lied to her to hand Becka over.
Becka now faces severe punishment for murder and trying to escape Gilead. The official penalty for murder in Gilead is death. But because Becka is fertile, the authorities might turn her into a Handmaid instead. Her fate remains unclear heading into the finale.
