Lil Wayne just dropped a bombshell about how his music really gets made, and his supporters are not happy about it.

The rap legend appeared on “Wake Up Barstool” on May 26, 2026, to talk about Tha Carter VII. But instead of getting fans excited for new music, his comments about the album selection process sparked a wave of frustration across social media.

Wayne revealed that he is unsure if his next project will even be called Tha Carter VII. He also explained that someone else comes in, grabs a bunch of his songs, and slaps a title on them.

“What they do is they just come in here and they just grab a bunch of songs and they just put a title on like this Carter 7. This So Carter 7 coming soon,” Wayne said during the interview.

The 43-year-old rapper added that he has “music for days” but does not have full control over which songs make the cut or what each project gets named.

Fans Say Wayne Is Ruining His Own Legacy

The reaction online was immediate and brutal. Longtime listeners who grew up on Wayne’s music expressed shock that one of hip-hop’s biggest stars does not have final say over his own albums.

“After hearing Tha Carter VI, he needs to retire immediately.”

“So Lil Wayne doesn’t have any control on his body of music and how to put it together no wonder the Carter six was trash and his music is to the wayside. He has no control.”

Others pointed directly at the quality drop in his recent work. Tha Carter VI came out in June 2025 through Young Money and Republic Records. The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 108,000 units sold. But sales did not match fan satisfaction.

“Stop grabbing songs and putting them anywhere that’s the problem.”

“Firstly, Wayne need to fire whoever picked the songs and beats for the Carter 6 or the Carter 7 will be dookie too.”

Some supporters suggested Wayne should start a fresh series instead of continuing to add to the Carter name.

“I respect him still trying to do albums but just create a new series or sum, he ruining the carter series.”

“Please stop ruining your legacy, Wayne… Especially with Tha Carter albums.”

The Carter Series Used To Mean Quality

The Tha Carter series started in 2004. Each album marked a major moment in hip-hop. Tha Carter III won Best Rap Album at the 2009 Grammy Awards. Songs like “Lollipop” and “A Milli” also took home trophies that night. Tha Carter IV got a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album in 2012.

But the latest installment did not live up to that history. Critics panned Tha Carter VI. Fans called out tracks like “Peanuts 2 N Elephant” as confusing and poorly produced. The album had guest spots from MGK, Kodak Black, Andrea Bocelli, Nicki Minaj, and Future. Even that lineup could not save it.

Wayne’s Comments Raise Big Questions About Creative Control

The rapper’s words suggest he may not be the one calling shots at this stage of his career. He told the hosts he does not know if his next release will be named Tha Carter VII or if the label will wait for another album to use that title.

“I don’t know when, if they going to just name it Tha Carter VII or they’re going to wait for another album and name it that, you know. But I got music for days,” Wayne explained.

Fans interpreted this as a sign that Wayne has handed over too much power to managers or label executives. Some said he needs to take back control before putting out another Carter album.

Wayne has been open about feeling overlooked by major award shows and the Super Bowl halftime selection committee. He has publicly expressed frustration about not getting a Grammy in major categories despite his massive influence on modern hip-hop.

The Tha Carter VI Tour is currently running across North America through October 23, 2026. The lineup includes Tyga, 2 Chainz, The Game, Gudda Gudda, Belly Gang Kushington, Lil Twist, and Jay Jones. Wayne performed his first headlining show at Madison Square Garden on this tour.

Wayne has not released any singles in 2026 so far. Whether Tha Carter VII arrives next or another project comes first remains unclear. But after his latest interview, many fans are questioning if they even want another Carter album if Wayne is not the one picking the tracks.
