Euphoria star Alexa Demie responds to public pressure about her career choices, making it clear she values personal choice over chasing the same spotlight as her castmates.
As the hit HBO show wraps its third season, Alexa Demie is finally speaking out. Fans have often wondered why she is not as visible as her co-stars Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, or Jacob Elordi. In a rare and honest interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 35-year-old actress set the record straight about her career, retirement rumors, and her view on fame.
She pushed back hard on the idea that she needs to be everywhere to be successful. For Demie, staying true to herself matters more than grabbing every big role.
‘What Happened to My Ability to Choose?’
Demie has noticed the online comments. People constantly compare her career path to her Euphoria castmates. They ask why she does not have more acting credits or brand deals. Her answer is simple and direct.
“It’s like, did you ever think that I don’t want it? People really take the authority out of your hands. What happened to my ability to choose? I like my life like this, and I wouldn’t change it.”
She explained that having fewer public appearances is a deliberate choice, not a failure. The actress values her privacy and a slower pace of life. She does not feel the need to chase the aggressive fame game that many young stars in Hollywood play.
No, She Is Not Retiring After ‘Euphoria’
For months, rumors spread online that Demie planned to quit acting for good after Euphoria. The speculation grew because she has been very selective with her projects. When asked about the gossip that she might retire, she responded with a little bit of humor.
“Should we just ride with it?” she joked, referring to the viral rumor.
But she quickly got serious. She confirmed that she is not going anywhere. Demie shared that she has goals and ambitions, but she plans to keep them to herself for now.
“There are goals, and things that I want, but I’m choosing to keep that private,” Demie stated.
She is currently working on a film based on her mother’s life and making music with her partner, Christian Berishaj (also known as JMSN). She is staying busy, just on her own terms.
Looking Back at Her Early Struggles
The interview also touched on her early days in Hollywood. She admitted that she felt a lot of pressure during the first season of Euphoria. Specifically, she talked about feeling forced to agree to s*x scenes.
“I thought I had to do them, and that if I said no, then I wouldn’t have the part,” Demie admitted. “Not because anyone ever said that to me, but because I was so young and I didn’t know.”
She recalled a specific scene where her character cheats on Nate. After filming it, she felt deeply uncomfortable. That was the moment she decided to speak up. She told the team how she felt, and they listened. She never had to film a scene like that again.
Creator Sam Levinson Defends Demie
Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria, also spoke up in the interview. He defended Demie’s approach to her career. He said people misunderstand her because they compare her to others using a “high school mentality.”
“I think Alexa is doing everything that she wants, and if she doesn’t have something, it’s because she doesn’t want it. I see her as completely fulfilled.”
Levinson also revealed that HBO executives did not originally think Demie was right for the role of Maddy Perez. They had a different image in mind. Demie had to fight hard to prove she was the perfect fit, despite doubts that she was “too Latin” for the part.

A Life Away From the Spotlight
While her co-stars take over magazine covers and movie posters, Demie is content working behind the scenes. She says she is still learning how to balance a public career with a private life.
She referenced singer Enya, who is famous for living a very secluded life. Demie joked that she could easily hide away like that. But for now, she is happy finding a middle ground.
She is focused on projects that mean something to her, like producing the movie about her mother, Rose Mendez. She is picking quality over quantity, and she makes no apologies for it.
