This release follows the film’s successful premiere at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in May 2026, where it played in the official Competition section.

Film Earns Long Standing Ovation and Strong Sales at Cannes

Hope made a big impact on the French Riviera. The movie received a seven-minute standing ovation from the Cannes audience after its first screening. Critics praised the film’s non-stop action and unique creature designs.

The film also sold well internationally. Sales company Plus M Entertainment closed deals for nearly 200 territories worldwide ahead of and during the festival. Major markets include the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Latin America. Pre-sales alone reportedly covered almost half of the film’s production budget before its release in South Korea.

Fassbender and Vikander Play the Aliens

The movie marks a special on-screen reunion for Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. The real-life couple, who met while filming 2016’s The Light Between Oceans, both play alien characters in Hope. They perform their roles through motion capture and CGI.

Director Na Hong-jin, famous for the horror hit The Wailing, wanted the aliens to feel real. “Their metamorphosis was done through facial and motion capture at the same time,” Na explained about Vikander’s role.

Other cast members playing aliens include Taylor Russell (Bones and All) and Cameron Britton (The Umbrella Academy). The human characters are played by top Korean stars: Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Hoyeon (Squid Game).

What Is the Movie About?

The story takes place in Hope Harbor, a quiet village near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in South Korea. Police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) gets reports from local kids about a tiger sighting. But the threat is much bigger than a wild animal.

Soon, the village falls into total panic. A group of hunters heads into the nearby forest to track the creature but ends up getting hunted themselves.

The movie runs 2 hours and 40 minutes. It starts with a long action sequence that lasts nearly an hour. Reviewers compare the fast-paced chase scenes to Mad Max: Fury Road and The French Connection.

Fall 2026 Box Office Competition

Hope opens on a Wednesday, giving it a head start before the busy weekend. On Friday, September 11, 2026, several other films will arrive in theaters. These include Practical Magic 2, The Uprising, and A24’s Primetime.

Neon has high hopes for the film. The studio previously released Longlegs, which became its highest-grossing domestic movie with $128 million. Neon also distributed the Best Picture Oscar winners Parasite and Anora.

Fassbender returns to the big screen following his 2025 spy thriller Black Bag, where he starred with Cate Blanchett. For audiences in the US and Canada, Hope arrives exclusively in theaters on September 9, 2026.
