The arrival of Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a thrilling moment for fans, but the journey to get here wasn’t all smooth sailing. Actor Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy recently opened up about the struggles and sacrifices involved in creating “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the upcoming film that marks Deadpool’s official MCU debut.
Finding the Perfect Fit: Patience and Sacrifice
After the MCU acquired the rights to characters previously owned by Fox, including Deadpool, Reynolds focused on bringing the Merc with a Mouth into the established universe. Speaking to Vanity Fair, Reynolds emphasized the time and dedication required for these films. He explained that the six-year gap between Deadpool movies reflects the intense planning involved. “These movies swallow lives whole,” he stated, highlighting the immense effort behind them.
Reynolds went on to compare the experience to a regular film. While effort is expected in any production, movies like “Deadpool & Wolverine” necessitate a level of commitment that can impact personal lives. “There’s a lot of sacrifice,” he admitted, mentioning the challenges of balancing work with seeing family.
Director Shawn Levy: A Strong Bond and a Search for the Right Story
Reynolds’ passion for Deadpool and his world is evident. He recalled pitching ideas to Marvel Studios, acknowledging the difficulty of finding the right place for the character within the MCU.
Director Shawn Levy chimed in, revealing that Reynolds approached him about directing another Deadpool movie, specifically if Levy was involved. Levy expressed his initial interest in Reynolds’ ideas, but stressed the importance of a strong storyline.
Levy explained the collaborative process that went into developing the script. He, Reynolds, and Deadpool’s original screenwriters, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, brainstormed alongside She-Hulk writer Zeb Wells. The team then held meetings with Marvel president Kevin Feige and his team. Levy emphasized the importance of crafting a “deserving” story that would do justice to Deadpool’s debut in the MCU.
Hugh Jackman’s Surprise Entry: A Turning Point
Just as frustration began to set in, a serendipitous twist occurred. Levy revealed that he and Reynolds were on the verge of informing Feige that they might need to postpone the project due to the lack of a compelling story. However, everything changed with a phone call.
Hugh Jackman, the actor synonymous with Wolverine, contacted Reynolds unexpectedly. Jackman, sharing his side of the story, recalled a moment of introspection on the beach. The question, “What do you want to do?” came to mind, leading to a clear answer: “Deadpool-Wolverine. I want to do that movie. That’s what I want.”
Jackman’s unexpected interest proved to be the missing piece. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is scheduled for release on July 26, 2024, much to the delight of fans eager to see the dynamic duo come together on screen.
