Fairy Tail fans can start marking their calendars. Creator Hiro Mashima officially announced the title of his upcoming short manga series as Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia. The project will debut in Kodansha’s Weekly Shลnen Magazine on July 29, 2026. This release marks the first time since 2017 that Mashima himself is writing and drawing a full Fairy Tail story.

The news came directly from Mashima’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on June 7, 2026. He shared the official logo and confirmed the release date in the magazine’s 35th issue of the year. The original plan targeted an August release, but Mashima finished material faster than expected. Kodansha decided to move the launch up to late July.

20th Anniversary Celebration Brings Back Beloved Characters

Fairy Tail first launched in August 2006. The series ran for 11 years before ending in July 2017. Now the franchise is celebrating two decades of magic, dragons, and guild adventures. The new miniseries serves as the centerpiece of these anniversary events.

Mashima is handling both the writing and art duties. This marks his return to fully creating Fairy Tail content. Since the original series ended, he worked on EDENS ZERO and supervised Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, which had art by Atsuo Ueda. Now fans get to see Mashima’s pen bring Natsu, Lucy, Happy, and the rest of the guild to life again.

The story will follow the original cast. No plot details have been shared yet. But fans are already guessing about possible storylines. Many want to see Lucy Heartfilia and Natsu Dragneel’s relationship develop further. Others just want more classic Fairy Tail missions and battles.

Short Term Serialization Confirmed by Kodansha

Kodansha confirmed that Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia will be a short-term concentrated serialization. This is not a new long-running series. The project will likely run for only a handful of chapters. The exact number of chapters has not been announced. Some reports suggest the miniseries will last a few weeks or a few months at most.

The shorter format makes sense for an anniversary special. Mashima is also working on other projects. His series Dead Rock continues to run. A short Fairy Tail story allows him to celebrate the franchise without pausing his other work for too long.

Crunchyroll’s Manga app is expanding its library on June 8, 2026. The platform is adding 24 Kodansha titles, including the original Fairy Tail manga. This means new and returning readers can catch up on the entire series before the miniseries drops. Other added titles include EDENS ZERO, Rave Master, A Silent Voice, and Noragami: Stray God.

What Fans Can Expect From the Comeback

The original Fairy Tail manga sold over 72 million copies worldwide. The anime adaptation ran for 328 episodes across multiple series. The franchise also produced nine films, OVAs, and several spin-off manga. Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest received an anime adaptation that began airing in 2024.

Mashima announced the new project in April 2026. He hinted that something special was coming for the 20th anniversary. Fans on social media responded with excitement. The announcement post on X gathered thousands of likes and retweets within hours.

The Japanese voice cast from the anime includes Tetsuya Kakihara as Natsu Dragneel, Aya Hirano as Lucy Heartfilia, and Rie Kugimiya as Happy. Sayaka Ohara voices Erza Scarlet, while Yuichi Nakamura plays Gray Fullbuster. Whether the miniseries will get an anime adaptation remains unknown. For now, the focus is on the manga release.

Kodansha USA publishes the original Fairy Tail series in English. International release details for Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia have not been announced yet. Fans outside Japan should watch for updates from Kodansha USA or Mashima’s social media accounts. The series will likely be available on digital platforms like K Manga, Book Walker, Amazon Kindle, and Apple Books.

The original Fairy Tail story follows Lucy, a celestial spirit mage who joins the chaotic and powerful Fairy Tail guild. She teams up with Natsu, a dragon slayer with motion sickness, and his talking cat Happy. Together they take on dangerous jobs, fight dark guilds, and become a family. The series ended with a satisfying conclusion in 2017. Now readers get one more chance to spend time with these characters.
