Widow’s Bay wrapped up its first season with a thrilling finale titled “We Hope You Enjoyed Your Time” on Apple TV+ on June 17, 2026. The horror-comedy series, created by Katie Dippold and starring Matthew Rhys, left viewers with a massive cliffhanger that completely changes the stakes for the recently announced Season 2. Director Hiro Murai, who helmed five episodes of the season including the finale, has broken down the shocking twist and explained exactly how the ending sets up the next chapter for the cursed island town.

The Season 1 Finale Twist Explained

The finale picks up right after Episode 9, where Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) discovered that his elderly secretary Ruth Livingston (K Callan) is the last descendant of the town’s founder, Richard Warren. The only way to break the 400-year-old curse is to end Warren’s bloodline entirely.

Tom goes to Ruth’s house during a raging storm, planning to kill her. But before he can act, Ruth reveals a secret: she gave up a child born out of wedlock. That child was Tom’s late wife, Lauren. This revelation means that Tom’s son, Evan (Kingston Rumi Southwick), is actually the last living descendant of Richard Warren.

The situation gets even more complicated when Sheriff Bechir Clemons (Kevin Carroll) shows up, desperate to protect his pregnant wife and unborn child from the curse. He shoots Ruth, but the storm doesn’t stop because Ruth wasn’t the true last descendant. Tom decides to hide the truth about his son’s identity to keep Evan safe.

Director Hiro Murai Breaks Down the Ending

Murai explains that the finale’s twist resets the entire show in a clever way. He told TV Insider:

“So what I love about how the season concluded is that it resets the table so you can do small, episodic, anthology episodes again, but there’s the added complication that Tom knows about Evan, he has to protect him from getting out to the rest of the island that he is the last descendant.”

The director also highlighted the complicated dynamic between Tom and Sheriff Bechir. Both men share a dark secret: they both went to Ruth’s house with the intention of ending her life. Murai sees them as two dedicated fathers doing whatever it takes to protect their families, which makes their conflict “cathartic, but a little bit maybe tragic too.”

What Season 2 Will Bring

With Season 2 already confirmed, Murai revealed that the show is essentially “resetting the table” while adding major new complications. Tom now has to keep Evan’s true identity a secret from the entire island. The truth could be fatal for Evan, since the curse requires the Warren bloodline to end.

Actor Kingston Rumi Southwick, who plays Evan, told TV Fanatic that he learned about the twist during production and was shocked. He’s hoping that Season 2 will pull Evan deeper into the island’s mythology, though he doubts Tom will suddenly start sharing all of his secrets.

“I don’t think Tom would tell him,” Southwick admitted. “Us trying to figure out how to fix it and then him not telling me still, and maybe me learning and being really upset at him, is something that sounds fun to do.”

The Island’s Future Remains Uncertain

The finale ends with the church bell tolling eight times, indicating that the island needs eight more souls to feed the curse. Murai remains tight-lipped about what exactly is lurking beneath Widow’s Bay, but he did confirm that the town is not truly cursed in the way residents believe.

Creator Katie Dippold offered a cryptic tease for Season 2: “Season two is about how everything is great on the island and there’s nothing to worry about.” Whether that statement is sarcastic or sincere remains to be seen.

With the series already renewed for Season 2 on Apple TV+ and Dippold signing a multi-year overall deal with the streamer, fans can expect more supernatural chaos from the cursed island. The show has received Certified Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes and is widely considered one of the best new shows of 2026.
