The excitement for Tom Holland’s return as the web-slinger in Spider-Man: Brand New Day hit a speed bump in India this week. Social media was flooded with rumors claiming that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had cut nearly five minutes from the film for its Indian release. However, Sony Pictures India has now stepped in to officially address the speculation, confirming that these reports are completely inaccurate.

As advance bookings for the highly anticipated Marvel sequel opened across the country, some cinema chains listed the movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 25 minutes. This sparked immediate backlash, as international listings, including IMDb, had previously shown a runtime of 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes). The discrepancy led many fans to believe that the CBFC had imposed edits on the superhero blockbuster.

Sony Pictures India’s Official Statement

Putting an end to the widespread rumors, Sony Pictures India clarified that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has not yet received its official certification from the CBFC. Since the film is still going through the censor board process, reports about specific cuts or scene removals are premature and based on unverified speculation.

The studio’s confirmation means that the runtime difference seen on booking platforms like PVR is likely due to placeholder listings. Experts suggest that variations in how theaters display film durations, including potential exclusions of end credits or intermission timings, can lead to these inconsistencies. Until the certification process is complete, claims about a five-minute cut remain false.

Advance Bookings Open Amid Format Controversy

Despite the brief confusion over the runtime, the hype for Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains massive in India. Sony Pictures Entertainment India has opened advance bookings for the film, which is set to release on July 30, 2026. In a significant move, the film will arrive in Indian theaters a day earlier than its North American release on July 31.

The film will be available in six languagesโ€”English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalamโ€”across multiple premium large format screens, including PLF, Big Pix, Screen X, ICE, 4DX, and MX4D, in both 2D and 3D. However, fans are disappointed that the film will not be screened in IMAX in India, marking a first for a Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film in the MCU.

What to Expect From the Film

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up after the events of No Way Home. Peter Parker lives a solitary life, fighting crime as Spider-Man in a world that has forgotten him. The film sees the return of Tom Holland alongside Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. The star-studded cast also includes Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, and Sadie Sink in a mystery role.
