The upcoming Big Bang Theory spinoff, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, has released its first official trailer. The series follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) as he accidentally breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, causing a “multiverse Armageddon.” The trailer shows Stuart traveling through different realities, and it confirms the return of several fan-favorite characters.

The show is set to premiere on July 23, 2026, on HBO and will be available to stream on Max (formerly HBO Max). The series is the fourth entry in the Big Bang Theory franchise, following Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

A Madcap Multiverse Adventure

The newly released trailer lives up to the show’s title. Stuart, who has always been a bit of an underdog, finds himself in way over his head. He is “tasked with restoring reality” after his accident. The official synopsis states that he is aided by his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), his geologist friend Bert (Brian Posehn), and the “quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass” Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie).

The trailer gives viewers a quick tour of the chaos. The team runs into several alternate realities, including one reminiscent of The Matrix and a Mad Max-style dystopia. One of the biggest draws of the series is the promise of “alternate-universe versions” of beloved Big Bang Theory characters. The trailer and promotional materials suggest a fast-paced, action-comedy tone, a significant departure from the original sitcom’s format.

Returning Cast and Creative Team

The series brings back several actors from the original show. Kevin Sussman reprises his role as the anxious and unlucky comic book store owner, Stuart Bloom. Sussman was a recurring guest star on the original series for 12 seasons, appearing in over 80 episodes. He was promoted to a series regular for the final two seasons.

Lauren Lapkus returns as Denise, Stuart’s girlfriend who also works at the comic book store. Brian Posehn is back as Bert, the geologist known for his rocks and his monotone voice. John Ross Bowie reprises his role as Barry Kripke, Sheldon’s rival who speaks with a speech impediment.

The series was created by Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, and Zak Penn, with Lorre and Prady being co-creators of the original Big Bang Theory. Kyle Newacheck directed several episodes of the 10-episode first season.

A “Big Swing” for the Franchise

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is a bold new direction for the franchise. Show co-creator Chuck Lorre has described the show as “a science fiction action-adventure comedy.” He acknowledged the risk involved, saying, “It’s a big swing. I think it will be revered or reviled. I’m not sure which.”

The show’s premiere date of July 23 on HBO and Max marks the beginning of a new chapter for the franchise. It will be interesting to see how this multiverse adventure is received by fans of the original series and newcomers alike.
