Marshals ended its October 25, 2026 episode with the season’s first real cliffhanger. “Blast Radius” sent Kayce Dutton and Andrea Cruz into a barn after a serial bomber, and the hour closed with that barn going up in flames. Neither character’s fate was shown. The episode also brought back a fugitive Cal let slip away in Season 1, put a 48-hour deadline on Belle’s casino debt, and pushed Andrea into a leadership role she may not be ready for. This was the first half of a two-part story, and the show left every major thread hanging.
What Happened Before Episode 4
Episode 3, “Falling Sky,” dealt with a military drone incident that raised tensions between federal agents and the Broken Rock Reservation. Kayce spent that hour worried about his son Tate (Brecken Merrill), who is still working through trauma. The episode also kept Cal’s lung cancer diagnosis in the background, with only Miles knowing the truth.
Season 2 began on October 4, 2026, and the premiere killed off Dolly Weaver (Ellyn Jameson), the woman Kayce had started seeing at the end of Season 1. That death followed Tom Weaver kidnapping Tate in the Season 1 finale. Kayce’s wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) had already died off-screen before the series began.
The Night Kayce and Andrea Stopped Sleeping
The episode opens with Kayce dreaming about the day his father burned the Yellowstone brand into his chest. A younger Kayce, played by Berlin Enrique Nelson, looks at the fresh scar. The memory goes back to John Dutton‘s decision to brand his son after Kayce refused to push Monica into an abortion when she became pregnant with Tate.
Andrea’s night is no better. She is still dealing with the aftermath of her kidnapping and keeps seeing faces from that trauma. A late-night text from Kayce, just two words, pulls her out of it.
“You up?” — Kayce Dutton, in a text to Andrea
The pair spend the night serving warrants and rounding up fugitives instead of sleeping. The montage is quick and shows how comfortable they are working together. One of those arrests gives them something much bigger than a routine collar.
A Ghost from Cal’s Past Returns
The fugitive they bring in offers information in exchange for a lighter sentence. That tip points to Rudy Carpenter, a serial bomber who escaped the Marshals in Season 1, Episode 4, also titled “The Gathering Storm.” Cal and Kayce had to let Rudy go because saving Tom Weaver’s life came first. Chief Deputy Harry Gifford (Brett Cullen) has never let Cal forget it.
Braxton Hale plays Rudy, a man who has been on the run for three years and is now back in Montana. Cal wants another shot at him. Gifford has a different plan. He puts Andrea in charge of the hunt as a test run for the day she may have to fill Cal’s job during his medical leave.
Cal has told Gifford about his cancer. Gifford responds by asking Cal who should replace him, which lands about as well as expected.
“I devoted my life to protecting people. I’m not looking for their pity.” — Cal, to Gifford
Belle’s Casino Problem Gets a Deadline
Belle’s morning starts with her son Braxton and a smashed car window. A man in a suit tells her the casino needs its full payment plus interest within 48 hours. Belle hides the threat from her son and later from everyone else.
The casino debt has been a background thread since Season 1. Now it has a clock on it, and the episode treats it as a real problem rather than a side note. Belle spends the rest of the hour doing her job while clearly carrying something heavy.
The Disciples and the Missing Bomber
Andrea finds chatter on the dark web linking Rudy to a local gang called the Disciples, run by brothers Paul and Nick Soler. The brothers have outstanding warrants for grand theft auto, which gives the team legal cover to raid their chop shop.
The raid turns into a firefight. Rudy is not there when the shooting stops. Nick Soler talks after some pressure from Andrea and Kayce, and what he says changes the case.
“Rudy’s got his hands on blasting caps. He’s not on the lam, he’s making a bomb.” — Nick Soler
Cal is not happy with how Andrea got the answer. A team leader has to think about more than whether a tactic works, and Cal tells her so.
The Country Club Visit and the Broken Shotgun
Kayce and Belle ride horses onto a golf course to find Rudy’s ex-wife Audrey (Nicole Zyana). She is surrounded by bodyguards and has no interest in helping. She does offer one warning.
“He won’t be going back to prison. That first stretch did damage. He came out a different man. He always has an escape plan.” — Audrey
Cal and Miles find a bag behind a gas station. Inside is a broken Remington 870 shotgun, the same weapon Cal and Kayce lost to Rudy last season. That confirms the team is chasing the right man.
Andrea Takes Charge
Gifford keeps pushing Andrea forward. She coordinates from headquarters, makes calls on the dark web lead, and pushes for answers when the trail goes cold. Cal questions her methods, and the two clash over how far the team should go.
The episode does not settle that argument. It shows both sides. Andrea gets results. Cal worries about what those results cost.
Kayce and Andrea share a quiet moment before the raid on the farm.
“I prefer to keep a low profile. Would just as soon follow you into the fire, cowboy.” — Andrea Cruz
“I’m more of a protect the herd than lead the pack kind of guy.” — Kayce Dutton
The Farm, the Crater, and the Barn
Air footage shows a blast crater at an old farm northwest of Bozeman. Rudy has been testing his explosives. The team suits up and moves in.
Rudy’s van is parked near the barn. Shots are fired. Rudy appears to go down. Then he sets off the bomb anyway. The barn explodes with Kayce, Andrea, and Rudy inside. The screen cuts to black.
The episode does not show who walked out. Luke Grimes is the lead of the show, so Kayce’s survival is not really in question. Andrea is the one the hour puts in danger, and the show has already killed off semi-regular characters this season.
Where Each Character Stands After Blast Radius
- Kayce Dutton: He spent the episode avoiding his feelings about Tate and his father. He ended it inside a bombed barn with Andrea.
- Andrea Cruz: She took control of a major case, clashed with Cal over tactics, and is still dealing with kidnapping trauma. She is also closer to Kayce than ever, which the show frames as both a bond and a risk.
- Cal: His cancer is no longer a secret from Gifford, but it is still a secret from Maddie. He is fighting to stay in the field while his replacement is being discussed.
- Belle: She has 48 hours to pay a casino debt and has told no one.
- Miles: He is stuck between Cal’s confidence and Maddie’s questions, and the lie is wearing on him.
- Maddie: She knows something is wrong with Cal but has not been told what.
- Rudy Carpenter: He got his revenge on the Marshals by blowing up the barn, and his fate is also unconfirmed.
