This City is Ours is back on BBC One and BBC iPlayer with a second season that brings back the core Phelan family circle and adds two major new players to the Liverpool crime saga. The new chapter picks up right after the events of season one, with Michael Kavanagh and Diana Williams pulled back from their fresh start in Spain. Here is a complete, easy-to-follow guide to who is returning, who is joining, and what each actor has said about the new season.

James Nelson-Joyce Returns as Michael Kavanagh

James Nelson-Joyce leads the cast again as Michael Kavanagh, the former fixer for the Phelan crime family who chose a life with Diana at the end of season one. The new season begins with Michael and Diana in Spain, but Michael is soon dragged back into the world he tried to leave behind. Nelson-Joyce described his character as “a complex mix of ruthless and vulnerable” and said season two tests Michael’s promise to Diana against the pull of his old life.

The actor also teased that Shaun Evans brings “a bit of villainy to the show” as the new character Ozzie Thompson, and he praised co-star Mike Noble for his work this season.

Hannah Onslow Back as Diana Williams

Hannah Onslow returns as Diana Williams, Michael’s partner and a civilian who has been pulled into the orbit of the Phelan firm. Onslow said season two is “all about consequences” and that Diana’s past choices catch up with her in ways viewers will not expect. “I’m really excited for people to meet Felipe,” she said of the new Colombian character. “He really rocks things for Diana and Michael… I think people are going to love him and also hate him”.

Jack McMullen and Mike Noble Return

Jack McMullen is back as Jamie Phelan, the son of the murdered gang leader Ronnie Phelan (Sean Bean). Jamie sees himself as the rightful heir to his father’s empire, and season two puts him in direct conflict with Michael over control of the firm. McMullen said Jamie sees “an opportunity to take control of his dad’s gang” in the new episodes.

Mike Noble returns as Banksey, whose actions at the end of season one set much of season two’s story in motion. Noble said Banksey’s storyline this year is about “dealing with the repercussions of his actions” as the firm falls into disarray.

Julie Graham, Laura Aikman, and Kevin Harvey in the Power Struggle

Julie Graham returns as Elaine Phelan, Ronnie’s widow. Graham described Elaine as “an iron fist in a velvet glove” and said the new season finds the gang fractured and driven by grief, anger, and a need for vengeance. She called Ozzie Thompson “a real catalyst that drives a lot of the narrative” through season two.

Laura Aikman is back as Rachel Duffy, who was pushed aside by the men in the business during season one. Aikman said Rachel is “angry” and ready to go at the start of season two, and that the new episodes show her becoming “more powerful than we’ve ever seen her”.

Kevin Harvey returns as Bobby Duffy, who was given joint control of the organisation alongside Banksey at the end of season one. Harvey said Bobby has “a monumental struggle to maintain the power” as the firm splinters.

Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Darci Shaw, Adam Abbou, and Bobby Schofield

Saoirse-Monica Jackson returns as Cheryl Crawford, and Darci Shaw is back as Melissa Sullivan. Adam Abbou returns as Freddie, Banksey’s son, and Bobby Schofield returns as Bonehead.

Shaun Evans Joins as Ozzie Thompson

Shaun Evans, known for his decade-long role in Endeavour, joins the cast as Ozzie Thompson, an old-school gangster from Ronnie Phelan’s era who has just been released from prison. Ozzie wants compensation for the years he lost while serving a sentence for crimes committed on the firm’s orders, and his arrival shakes up the power balance in Liverpool. James Nelson-Joyce said Evans plays Ozzie with “this charm and this twinkle” but that “the undertone was very manipulative”.

Álvaro Morte Joins as Felipe Guzman

Álvaro Morte, best known as The Professor in Money Heist, plays Felipe Guzman, a member of the Colombian cartel and the younger brother of Ricardo, who was killed at the end of season one. Felipe arrives with his own reasons for wanting answers about his brother’s death, and his presence pulls Michael and Diana back into the criminal world.
