The Dance of the Dragons is entering a new and dangerous phase. House of the Dragon Season 3 has already delivered the long-awaited Fall of King’s Landing, with Rhaenyra Targaryen finally claiming the Iron Throne. But the victory came at a huge cost, and the new trailer for Episode 3 shows that ruling might be even harder than winning the war.

HBO released the trailer for Episode 3 on June 28, giving fans a first look at what comes next. Episode 3 will premiere on July 5, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max. The new footage focuses on Rhaenyra’s first major decisions after taking King’s Landing. Her rule is already facing serious challenges.

Rhaenyra Faces the Weight of the Crown

The trailer opens with Rhaenyra speaking about her new position. She says she must prove that her father, King Viserys, made the right choice in naming her heir. The burden of leadership is clear in her words. She wants to rule with the same fairness that Viserys showed during his time as king.

But her advisers are not so optimistic. A council member warns Rhaenyra that her resources are limited. He tells her that she faces many dangers. This suggests that the new queen is walking into a political storm.

Daemon Targaryen also delivers a harsh reality check in the trailer. He brings up Daeron Targaryen, a potential rival claimant to the throne. “You’re going to have to kill him,” Daemon tells Rhaenyra directly. This line shows how the war is forcing the queen to think about difficult choices.

Daemon goes even further with his advice. He tells Rhaenyra that she cannot stay the same person and rule successfully. “A door within her must shut,” he warns. This suggests that the crown will demand sacrifices from Rhaenyra, possibly changing who she is as a person.

Alicent Hightower Delivers a Grim Warning

Alicent Hightower also appears in the new trailer. Her words echo Daemon’s warning. “You may not rule and remain yourself,” Alicent tells Rhaenyra. She adds that Rhaenyra will do things that her heart would have once rejected.

This is a powerful moment. Alicent’s friendship with Rhaenyra has been a central theme of the series. But the war has changed everything between them. Rhaenyra has just executed Alicent’s father, Otto Hightower. The betrayal and loss make Alicent’s warning feel even more personal.

Alicent also speaks about time. She appears briefly in the trailer and says that time will tell what happens. It is a quiet moment, but it carries a lot of weight given everything that has happened between the two women.

Rhaenyra Refuses to Lose Herself

Despite the pressure, Rhaenyra pushes back against the advice she is getting. “I dispute that I must become what I am not,” she responds firmly. She believes she can rule fairly without becoming a cruel or ruthless ruler.

This conflict between who Rhaenyra is and what the throne demands will likely be the main focus of Episode 3. Can she hold onto her values while making the hard choices of war? Or will the crown slowly change her, as Daemon and Alicent predict?

Episode 3 Marks a Milestone

Episode 3 is more than just another episode. It marks the 100th episode of television set in the World of Westeros franchise. This count includes all episodes from Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

The milestone episode was written by Sara Hess and directed by Clare Kilner. Kilner now joins an exclusive group of directors who have helmed seven or more episodes in the franchise. The other directors in this group are Miguel Sapochnik, Alan Taylor, and David Nutter.

The creative team is clearly paying attention to the episode’s significance. A major milestone like this needs a strong story, and the trailer suggests that Episode 3 will deliver exactly that.

The Current State of the War

By the time Episode 3 begins, Rhaenyra has already taken King’s Landing. This happened in Episode 2, which featured the Fall of King’s Landing. But the war is far from over.

Aegon II has fled the capital. He is in Essos with Larys Strong, trying to escape his brother Aemond. Rhaenyra can claim that Aegon is dead, but everyone knows he is still out there. His return could create major problems for her rule.

Meanwhile, the Battle of the Gullet has already happened. This was a huge naval battle featured in Episode 1. The Velaryon fleet faced the Triarchy, an alliance of three Free Cities. The battle was a major set piece that showrunner Ryan Condal called “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made.”

But the victory at King’s Landing does not end the conflict. There are still many people who support Aegon’s claim to the throne. Rhaenyra also has a weak Small Council and must deal with the everyday matters of running a city.
