FreddyLA7, the German football supporter who became an unexpected internet sensation during the 2026 World Cup, has deactivated his X account. The decision came after Germany’s elimination from the tournament and what he described as online bullying from users who questioned his authenticity and dug through his past posts.
The anonymous fan had been documenting a six-week road trip across the United States and Canada while following the German national team. His posts about trying American fast food, visiting landmarks, and experiencing local culture attracted hundreds of thousands of followers in just a few weeks.
Who Is FreddyLA7 and How Did He Become Famous?
FreddyLA7 is a German university student who traveled to the United States for the 2026 World Cup. He chose to keep his identity private, covering his face in all photos and videos he shared online. His account grew from roughly 11,000 followers to nearly 380,000 within days of starting his trip on June 5.
His content stood out because of his genuine excitement about everyday American experiences. He posted about eating at Waffle House at 1 a.m., shopping at Walmart, visiting Buc-ee’s gas stations, and trying Taco Bell. One post about Buc-ee’s received over 5.7 million views.
The German fan traveled with two friends and packed mostly football jerseys for the six-week journey. He had tickets to seven World Cup matches, including Germany’s opener and two Portugal games.
Attention From US Officials and Celebrities
Freddy’s posts caught the attention of several high-profile Americans. Former NFL star JJ Watt reached out and offered to host him in Houston. Country singer Ella Langley invited him backstage at a concert after he shared that her music became the soundtrack for his trip.
US government officials also took notice. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy shared Freddy’s posts and encouraged Americans to suggest places for him to visit. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey invited him to return for college football season, writing:
“Y’all ought to come back in the fall to see just how we do Saturdays in Alabama.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis responded to one of Freddy’s videos, playfully correcting him about the Gulf of Mexico and welcoming him to enjoy Florida’s beaches.
Why Did FreddyLA7 Delete His X Account?
Germany’s World Cup campaign ended on June 30 when the team lost to Paraguay in a penalty shootout during the Round of 32. Less than 24 hours after the loss, Freddy’s X account disappeared.
However, he explained the real reason through his active Instagram account. In an Instagram Story, he wrote:
“This was the plan all along even before we started the World Cup tripโฆ Too many people seem to have a problem with us having a genuinely good time here in the country, and this is ruining the fun a bit.”
He also addressed accusations from some users who had dug through his older posts:
“People are digging in my 22k posts to find a handful of their opinion controversial posts and post them without zero context to make me look like a bad person.”
Freddy mentioned that X had become “just too toxic” for him to continue posting there. He decided to continue sharing his journey on Instagram instead, where he said he could maintain a more positive atmosphere.
Addressing Authenticity Concerns and Sponsorship Claims
As his popularity grew, some online users questioned whether Freddy’s content was genuine. Some suggested he might be part of a marketing campaign or a social experiment.
Freddy addressed these concerns on Instagram, stating he had not received any sponsorships. He said the only free things he accepted were hotel invitations from JJ Watt, Ella Langley, and Gordon Ramsay. He added that he had turned down “so much money” from brands to keep his road trip authentic.
He also revealed that he is a university student who had saved money for years to afford this trip.
