The wait is finally over for fans of Korean cinema. The full international trailer for Hope has dropped, and it shows Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon fighting for their lives against alien creatures. The movie comes from Na Hong-jin, the director behind famous films like The Chaser, The Yellow Sea, and The Wailing. This is his first movie in ten years since The Wailing came out in 2016.
The trailer gives viewers a closer look at what happens when a quiet village near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) turns into a war zone. What starts as a simple tiger sighting quickly becomes something much worse. The people of Hopo Port must fight against unknown creatures that have crash-landed nearby.
Massive Budget and Star-Studded Cast Make Hope One of 2026’s Biggest Films
Hope is reported to be the most expensive Korean movie ever made. The production budget is at least 70 billion Korean won, and with marketing costs, the total could reach 100 billion won. This huge investment shows how much faith the producers have in director Na Hong-jin and his vision.
The cast brings together some of South Korea’s biggest names. Hwang Jung-min plays Beom-seok, the head of the police substation in Hopo Port. Zo In-sung takes on the role of Seong-gi, a young hunter who spends his days hunting and fishing in the village. Jung Ho-yeon, who became famous worldwide for her role in Squid Game, plays Seong-ae, a police officer who always does her duty no matter what.
The film also features Hollywood actors in special roles. Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton play the alien characters through motion capture technology. This mix of Korean and international talent has created a lot of buzz around the project.
The Story Behind Hope: From Tiger Sighting to Alien Invasion
The story of Hope begins in a small coastal village called Hopo Port, located near the DMZ. Local youths report seeing a tiger in the area. Police chief Beom-seok and his team go to investigate. But what they find is not a tiger. It is something far more dangerous.
The village goes on high alert as the truth becomes clear. Alien creatures have arrived, and they are not friendly. The residents must fight for their survival against these unknown beings. The trailer shows large-scale action sequences, creature attacks, and tense confrontations across forests and the isolated harbor town.
Director Na Hong-jin explained that he wanted to make a movie that is very different from The Wailing. He said, “This film is the exact opposite of The Wailing. The story had to be felt through the action”. He added, “Without dialogue or description, the action itself had to carry what the film wants to say”.
Cannes Film Festival Premiere and Mixed Reactions
Hope premiered in the Competition section at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in May 2026. This made it the first Korean film to compete at Cannes since Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave in 2022.
The movie received a seven-minute standing ovation after its world premiere. However, it also sparked divided reactions from critics and audiences. Some praised its bold vision and large-scale action. Others questioned its unconventional style. This mix of opinions made Hope one of the most talked-about films at the festival.
Director Na Hong-jin made changes to the film after its Cannes screening. He cut more than five minutes from the original version. At the same time, he added about three to four minutes of new material. He explained that the theatrical version is different from what audiences saw at Cannes.
Actors Share Their Experience of Acting Against CGI Aliens
For Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon, acting in Hope was a new experience. They had to perform while imagining creatures that would only be added later through CGI.
Hwang Jung-min spoke about this challenge at a press conference in Seoul. He said, “This was my first time acting in this way. It must have been unfamiliar not only to me but to all of our actors”. He added that the director told them about the height and gaze of the aliens, and they performed with careful calculations.
Zo In-sung also found the experience difficult. He said, “It was not an easy task to act in a state where there was nothing there”. He focused on showing the fear his character faced and the will to survive.
Jung Ho-yeon, making her feature film debut, had laser pointers placed where her eyes should look during scenes. The actors had to use their imagination completely, as their scene partners would only appear in post-production.
Director Na Hong-jin on the Film’s Divisive Ending
One of the most talked-about aspects of Hope is its ending. Director Na Hong-jin revealed that the backstory of the alien creatures only appears in the closing minutes of the film. Some viewers at Cannes found this confusing.
Na explained that the ending was not written to complete the story he had been telling. He called it “an epilogue, plain and simple”. He noted that the main story “ends in tragedy”. Despite any confusion, he believes the film stands complete on its own.
The director also talked about how he chose the title Hope. He said, “Actually I thought of the title ‘Hope’ first and created a fictional place name. I imagined a small Korean village and invented a place name with a similar-sounding meaning”.
