The John Wick franchise is moving forward with multiple new projects. Lionsgate has confirmed that John Wick: Chapter 5 is in active development with Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski both returning. At the same time, the Caine spin-off starring Donnie Yen has officially wrapped filming. These updates give fans a clear picture of what is coming next in the action universe.
Caine Spin-off Wraps Filming, Targets 2027 Release
The next movie in the John Wick franchise is the Caine spin-off. Donnie Yen confirmed on Instagram that filming has wrapped, sharing a photo of the clapperboard with the caption “That’s a wrap!”. The film began production in April 2026 and is now on track for a 2027 theatrical debut.
Yen reprises his role as the blind assassin introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4. He also serves as director and producer on the project. The cast includes Rina Sawayama returning as Akira, along with new additions Dacre Montgomery and Bill Nighy in undisclosed roles.
“What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero.” – Donnie Yen
The story follows Caine after the events of Chapter 4, after he is freed from his obligations to the High Table. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said Caine’s popularity made his story “the most natural next chapter of the franchise”.
John Wick 5 Has a Core Idea in Place
John Wick: Chapter 5 remains in active development. Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson confirmed that Reeves and Stahelski have developed a “core idea” for the fifth film.
“Chad and Keanu have an idea that they think can be really exciting. There are a lot of steps, so I wouldn’t want to put a timeline on it. But in terms of finding a core idea, they seem to have landed on something that they are excited about, and now we’ll see.” – Adam Fogelson
The project has not officially entered production. Lionsgate executive Jenefer Brown also confirmed that John Wick 5 is still in development. The studio remains optimistic about continuing the franchise.
Stahelski is currently working on the Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill. He is expected to focus on John Wick 5 after finishing that project.
Animated Prequel and Other Projects in the Works
The John Wick universe also includes an animated prequel film. The movie will follow Baba Yaga as he completes The Impossible Task. Keanu Reeves will voice Wick in the animated project. Shannon Tindle directs with a script by Vanessa Taylor.
Stahelski previously shared his excitement about the animated project:
“I’ve always been fascinated with anime. It has always been a huge influence on me, especially with the John Wick series. To have the opportunity to develop a John Wick anime seems to be the perfect progression for the John Wick world.” – Chad Stahelski
The Ballerina spin-off starring Ana de Armas was released last year. It is now available on Amazon Prime and reached second place on the platform’s worldwide Top Movies list.
