Tom Holland has revealed that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures already have a detailed plan in place for when he eventually steps away from the Spider-Man character. The actor shared the news during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, just as his latest film Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters worldwide.
Plan Has Been in Development Since No Way Home
Holland confirmed that discussions about his eventual replacement have been happening behind the scenes for several years. The planning process began shortly after the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.
“There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the 30-year-old actor shared on the podcast. “It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting.”
The actor also mentioned that he genuinely looks forward to these planning meetings and considers helping shape the character’s future as one of his top priorities.
“I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing I want to do most in this character, for sure,” Holland added.
Holland Wants to Mentor the Next Spider-Man
The British actor drew a direct comparison between his own experience and what he hopes to offer the next person to wear the Spider-Man suit. He referenced how Robert Downey Jr. guided him during his early days in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next,” Holland told Esquire earlier this year.
Holland has also spoken about being open to helping introduce different versions of the character, including Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, or Spider-Woman.
“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” he said in a previous interview. “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
Owen Cooper Named as Potential Successor
When asked about who could potentially take over the role, Holland pointed to Adolescence star Owen Cooper as a strong candidate.
“Owen Cooper would be awesome. Obviously, he is super-talented and the talk of the town right now,” Holland said.
Cooper, who gained widespread recognition for his performance in the Netflix series Adolescence, has previously expressed interest in playing the Marvel hero. The young actor is among several names that fans and industry observers have speculated about as potential successors.
A Decade as Peter Parker
Holland first appeared as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, marking his official entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He went on to lead Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017 alongside Robert Downey Jr., and continued playing the character in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The actor is the third person to portray the web-slinger on the big screen, following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. His upcoming film Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks his seventh appearance as the character.
Brand New Day Opens Strong
Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrived in theaters on July 31, 2026, with an early release in India on July 30. The film has already broken opening night records, bringing in $72 million in Thursday night previews, surpassing Avengers: Endgame which took in $60 million in 2019.
The movie is being shown in multiple languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada in India, and is available in various premium formats.
Future of Spider-Man in the MCU
While Holland has confirmed the existence of a succession plan, he also recently stated that he is willing to play Spider-Man for “as long as they’ll have me”. The actor has expressed a strong desire to bring Miles Morales to the live-action screen and guide the actor who eventually takes on the role.

This has led many fans to speculate that Miles Morales could be the natural successor to Holland’s Peter Parker.
Holland also voiced support for separate Spider-Man projects running concurrently with his MCU run, including potential new films for previous Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
The actor’s comments confirm that Marvel and Sony are thinking long-term about the Spider-Man franchise, ensuring the character continues to evolve beyond Holland’s tenure. With the plan already laid out and discussions actively taking place, fans can expect a carefully managed transition when the time eventually comes for Holland to pass on the mantle.
