The latest episode of the AMC spin-off shows Maggie making a dangerous choice to expand her community while Negan takes matters into his own hands.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Episode 2, titled “Haven,” aired on August 2, 2026, and it delivered one of the season’s biggest twists so far. The episode finds Maggie Rhee finally settling into a stable shelter at a fortified hospital in Manhattan, where she plans to build a lasting community alongside newcomer Renata. But her decision to expand their reach and welcome more survivors comes with serious risks that could put everyone in danger.
The episode, written by Matthew Negrete, picks up weeks after the season premiere. Maggie has moved her people into the hospital fortress that Renata and her brother Luis already occupied. The place has power running in key areas, early-warning systems are in place, and supplies are being stockpiled. For the first time in years, Maggie looks settled and is thinking about long-term plans, including the possibility of ploughing parts of Central Park to grow real crops.
Maggie Pushes for Expansion Despite Warnings
Maggie’s decision to extend the group’s control over the city is the central conflict of the episode. She believes that bringing in more survivors is necessary for the future and for securing more resources. Renata supports the vision but stays cautious about how fast they should expand. Maggie, however, takes Negan’s warnings as encouragement rather than caution and pushes forward with an ambitious expansion into Central Park.
Negan, on the other hand, is far less optimistic. He has taken up residence at Dillard’s bar, a strange little outpost that still has working lights, a jukebox, and even a PlayStation. He drinks, plays video games, and stays clear of Maggie’s hospital community. When he does engage, he questions Maggie’s decision to keep the Dama alive and warns that trusting too many people could put everyone in danger. He is skeptical there are enough decent people left in Manhattan to make her vision work.
The Dama’s Fate Takes a Dark Turn
One of the biggest developments in “Haven” is the fate of the Dama. Following the death of the Croat in the season premiere, the Dama attempts to rebuild her influence by gathering a small group of followers inside an abandoned theatre. Maggie, Negan, and Perlie Armstrong track them down, leading to a violent confrontation that wipes out nearly all of her supporters.
Negan immediately tries to kill the Dama, believing she remains too dangerous to be left alive. Maggie intervenes and instead chooses to imprison her at the hospital, hoping there is another way to deal with the situation. She locks the Dama in a cage, and when the Dama goes on a hunger strike, Maggie provides a knife with her tuna casserole, explaining that she could choose to eat or choose to end it right then and there.
That decision does not last long. Later, Maggie discovers what appears to be the Dama’s body after she seemingly dies from a knife wound. However, the scene strongly hints there is much more to her death than meets the eye. While the episode never directly shows the killing, it heavily suggests Negan secretly murdered the Dama after deciding Maggie’s compassion would eventually put the community at risk. He went into her cell and killed her with the knife Maggie had given her. Maggie quickly suspects someone else was responsible, setting up another potential conflict.
Negan’s Decision Explained by Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays Negan, spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his character’s decision to kill the Dama. He explained that Negan has closed himself off from what Maggie has been up to and this new group of people. He has Dillard, his bar, his liquor, and his video games, and he is quite happy with his life at that point.
“And then Margaret shows up and she needs his help. And the Dama is a direct threat to the Hershel and Maggie of it all. I know who the Dama is because I’ve spent time with her and I know how dangerous this person can be.”
Morgan also unpacked the layered reasons behind Negan’s decision. The Dama’s actions have terrorized the main characters for multiple seasons, with her cutting off Hershel’s toe and attempting to brainwash him being actions Negan finds unforgivable. For him, there is a level of vengeance to his decision to kill her. At the same time, he is also making what he believes is a tough but fair call to keep Maggie’s community safe.
Morgan noted that Negan is not a fan of Renata, who is rubbing him the wrong way. He does not think she should be leading them, and Negan has never done well with people telling him what to do. He is already leaning toward Maggie being the one in charge.
The Statue of Liberty Becomes a Beacon of Hope
The episode ends with Maggie and Renata relighting the Statue of Liberty as a literal beacon. The torch comes back on, and after years of darkness, the old symbol is visible again across the water. This was more of a message for the survivors out there who are looking for a safe place.
For Maggie, it represents hope and a chance to prove people can still change, something she believes Negan himself has demonstrated. She points to Negan’s own turnaround as proof that people can change for the better. Deep down, Maggie believes that people do deserve a second chance.
However, the action taken by her does not seem to be very safe, as it has the potential to put everyone in danger. Negan does not want Maggie to trust anyone so easily, and welcoming people who are complete strangers can even bring more danger than help. Whether Maggie’s decision is right or if it comes with its own consequences is something viewers will find out in the upcoming episodes.

Mixed Reactions From Critics
Reaction to “Haven” has been notably split. One review from Ready Steady Cut argued the episode manufactures conflict for its own sake and undercuts long-standing character dynamics, calling it a genuinely rough hour of television. The review pointed out that by having Negan execute the Dama in her hospital cell, the show destroyed almost ten years of character development in the span of a single chapter. It raised the troubling question of whether Dead City is destroying Negan’s redemption arc to keep the franchise alive.
Den of Geek took the opposite view, praising the episode’s visual choices and calling it a solidly entertaining chapter that uses the Statue of Liberty as a clever motif for Maggie’s newfound openness. Absolute Geeks gave the episode a 5 out of 5, describing it as a sharp, entertaining hour that lets Maggie build something hopeful while Negan proves he is still the same dangerous man.

The episode pushes Maggie and Negan into difficult moral territory and raises new questions about their uneasy partnership.
The show is moving in a very different direction after just two episodes. It is focusing more on Maggie and her attempt to create a sustainable community in Manhattan. The hospital is starting to feel like an actual community with plans that stretch beyond mere survival. Whether Maggie’s gamble will pay off or undo everything she has built remains to be seen.
