HBO has officially given the green light to a second season of its upcoming Harry Potter television series, and production is set to begin later this year. The announcement comes months before the first season has even premiered, showing the network’s confidence in the ambitious project.
Season 2 will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second book in J.K. Rowling’s fantasy series. Filming is scheduled to start in autumn 2026, with production taking place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the United Kingdom. The first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is set to debut during the 2026 holiday season on HBO and HBO Max.
Production Schedule Overlaps to Avoid Long Breaks
The network has planned overlapping production schedules to keep the series on track and avoid lengthy gaps between seasons. Season 1 began filming in July 2025 and is expected to wrap within weeks of the announcement. The team will then return to set in autumn 2026 for Season 2.
HBO chairman and CEO Casey Bloys previously stated that work on the second season had already begun while the first was still in production.
“There’ll be a break in there, but we’re going to do whatever we can to not have a huge gap,” Bloys said. “For the kids, obviously, but also for viewers, trying to not have massive gaps.”
The series is planned as a long-form adaptation of Rowling’s seven books, with one season expected to cover each novel over the course of a decade.
Jon Brown Promoted to Co-Showrunner for Season 2
Alongside the early renewal, HBO has promoted writer Jon Brown to co-showrunner for the second season. He joins current showrunner Francesca Gardiner, who will continue to lead the creative direction of the series.
Brown previously worked as a writer on the first season and is known for his work on the hit series Succession. Gardiner said the decision reflected the demands of managing overlapping production schedules.
“As we have laid out our plans for the overlapping production schedules to finish Season 1 by Christmas and to return to production for Season 2 this autumn, it has become clear that bringing on a co-showrunner is the key to maintaining our momentum,” Gardiner said in a statement.
“I’ve loved working with Jon from the very first day we met on ‘Succession’ through to these recent times together on ‘Harry Potter.’ Not only do I have huge admiration for his writing, but he’s also a brilliant collaborator and a lovely person. We are lucky to have him.”
Brown expressed his excitement about the new role.
“I’m incredibly excited to be collaborating with Francesca as co-showrunner,” Brown said. “It has been a joy to write on ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ and I’d like to thank Francesca and HBO for putting their faith in me to continue this remarkable journey. Cast and Characters for the New Series
The series features a new cast of young actors who were selected after an open casting search involving more than 30,000 children. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley.
The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. Janet McTeer has been cast as Professor Minerva McGonagall.
Mark Mylod, known for his work on Succession, serves as executive producer and directed multiple episodes of the first season. The series is produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
Season 2 Casting Updates
Casting for Season 2 is already underway. Sources indicate that casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann are searching for a young actor to play Colin Creevey, a recurring character who first appears in Chamber of Secrets. In the books, Creevey is a Muggle-born Gryffindor student who frequently carries a camera around Hogwarts.
The production is also recasting the role of Ginny Weasley after Season 1 actor Gracie Cochrane decided to exit the show. Cochrane’s family released a statement confirming her departure.
