Episode 17 of the dark fantasy anime delivers fast-paced action, clever deception, and major reveals about the Kagemori clan’s internal conflict.
The latest episode of Daemons of the Shadow Realm (also known as Yomi no Tsugai) aired on August 1, 2026 and brought the tension to a new level. Episode 17, titled “Crybaby and Naughty Child,” focuses on the long-awaited confrontation with Akio, the traitor who has been hiding within the Kagemori clan. What makes this episode stand out is how it relies on strategy, deception, and character development rather than just bigger fights. The episode runs for approximately 24 minutes and is available for streaming on Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Disney Plus.
Akio’s Trap: The Fake Asa Revealed
The episode opens with a major twist. The Asa that Akio targets is not the real Asa at all. She is actually Kagemori Jin’s daemon, Ai-chan, disguised as Asa. The real Asa is disguised as one of the clan head’s bodyguards and has already left the compound with him.
When Akio attacks the fake Asa, he immediately loses one of his arms. Realizing his cover is blown, Akio asks Jin how long he has known about his betrayal. Jin reveals that he suspected Akio from the very first time they met Yuru. The clue came from Yuru’s unique behavior. Yuru only attacks people with lethal force when he senses genuine killing intent directed at him. During that early encounter, Akio was overflowing with bloodlust toward Yuru, so Yuru instinctively threw his weapon at him. From that moment, Jin knew Akio was a threat.
This revelation shows how carefully the series has been building this twist. Way back in episode 4, before viewers even knew about Yuru’s quirk, Yuru tried to kill Akio. That meant Akio, unlike everyone else in Jin’s squad, wanted Yuru dead. It is a piece of narrative building that rewards viewers who have been paying attention from the beginning.
The Daemon Battle at the Warehouse
While the trap unfolds at the compound, another confrontation takes place at the Shingo warehouses. Gonzo, Fuyuki, and Natsuki are laying waste to Shingo’s property. But there is another twist. The person fighting alongside Gonzo is not Natsuki. It is Asa in disguise. The real Natsuki is back at home, actually a daemon controlled by Jin.
The episode introduces important new information about Gonzo Kagemori’s abilities. His daemon pair is called Hyakki Yako, which makes it possible for him to control many daemon pairs without any compatibility problems. This ability explains why Gonzo is so powerful. He can take all the daemons of the people at the warehouse because Asa’s Break ability breaks the contracts they have with their original masters. The series does not make Gonzo overpowered just for spectacle. It gives his incredible strength a logical explanation that fits naturally into its power system.
The Clash Between Gabby and Akio
The daemon battle between Gabby and Akio becomes the episode’s centerpiece. Akio’s daemon pair, called Mountain God (Yama-no-Kami), consists of two huge eyes. They are too big for Jin’s daemon to swallow and too big for Haruo’s daemons to affect.
However, Gabby is there, and her daemon Gabriel has the ability to chop anything regardless of size. This makes it a poor matchup for Akio’s giant daemon pair. Gabby fights at a disadvantage because she has been ordered not to kill Akio or his daemon pair. But despite this handicap, Gabby looks like she is winning as her daemon slowly chomps at Akio’s daemons.
What makes Gabby’s anger so compelling is the reason behind it. She flies into a rage not just because Akio is a traitor or because he tried to kill Asa. What truly sets her off is his comment that he will destroy the Kagemori compound to prevent Asa from having any safe place to hide. Gabby sees Asa’s life as a series of prisons, loss, and death. Asa escaped a literal dark cage only to lose her parents, her extended family, and then her own life. The best she can get now is the freedom to move about a small compound while surrounded by the few people who truly care for her. Taking even that away is too much for Gabby to bear.
The mystery behind Gabby’s intense reaction is what makes her character so interesting. Why do all the bad things that have happened to Asa matter so much to Gabby? Yes, they are friends, but that seems like only the most obvious piece of the puzzle. Does Gabby see her past self in Asa? Is Gabby in Asa’s debt? Do they have a shared history? The episode shows us the effect but not the cause, which makes viewers want to know more.
Akio’s Defeat and Capture
Akio eventually gives up and frees his daemons from their contract with him. He is saved from death by Natsuki’s daemons, but he still refuses to surrender. His refusal becomes his downfall. He ends up captured inside the scrotum of Makoto’s tanuki daemon. Some viewers noted this as a surprising and somewhat humorous moment, with one fan commenting that it might be the first time they had seen the tanuki testicle thing since watching Pom Poko.
The episode raises an important question: who is Akio working with? It is not Higashi Village, as he disdainfully accuses Jin of being in league with them. It could be the Shingo faction, though they would not want Asa dead for obvious reasons. Finding the answer is probably one reason Jin is so determined to capture him alive.
Yuru’s Counterattack
While all this is happening, Yuru has not been sitting idle. After being kidnapped in the previous episode, Yuru does not waste time feeling sorry for himself. Instead, he immediately turns the tables by taking Shingo hostage and using his phone to demand the release of the captured children. Yuru manages to get the jump on Shingo thanks to a weapon hidden up his trouser leg.
This move shows just how much Yuru has matured since the beginning of the series. He is still impulsive, but he is now using his intelligence and quick thinking to gain an advantage. When Yuru tells Asama not to move or he will kill Shingo, Asama mutters, “I wouldn’t mind if you did”. This dark humor adds another layer to the already tense situation.
The episode ends with the entry of Fujin and Raijin, setting up the next installment. Episode 18, titled “Fujin and Raijin,” is scheduled to air on August 8, 2026.

What Makes This Episode Work
Episode 17 succeeds because it balances multiple storylines without losing focus. The action is fast-paced and exciting, but what really stands out is how much the episode relies on strategy, deception, and character development. The conflict does not become another example of good versus evil. Even when fighting, Jin tries to capture Akio and his daemon pair instead of killing them, showing that both sides are operating according to their own beliefs rather than blindly seeking revenge.

Some viewers have noted that the episode is wall-to-wall fighting, which is not as interesting as the more varied approach the series usually takes. However, the episode still fills in gaps in knowledge and moves the story forward in meaningful ways.
